After 10 Days Bicycle Holidays with the 1040 Solar - Bug 8 - Estimated Up-Hill is far to much

GPX/TCX imported tracks/files in 1040 are calculated with way too much estimated uphill meters.

normally i plan roadbike trips with the very fine "quäldich" route planer.
this route-planer use barometric elevation data where available.
as a result you get very close uphill meters and gradient data.

an imported gpx/tcx will be shown with much more estimated uphill-meters in 1040.

examples - calculated uphill-meters from route-planer, edge 1030 and edge 1040

quäldich  -  1030   -   1040
-------------------------------------
1349m    -  1505m -  3554m
1108m    -  1270m  - 2592m

  • My experience has been the 1040 is far more accurate than the 1030. The 1030 overestimated and the 1040 is very close to actual.  But I’ve always found a variation from the. 800, 1000, 1030 and now 1040.  I think anything relying only on barometric pressure is not going to be 100%.  Unless of course you want to pay +$1000 for accurate pressure measurement (yes that’s what it really costs as I worked in a company that sold high accuracy pressure transmitters).

As a check under System > Altimeter. Do you have Auto. cal enabled set to on?

  • I'm NOT talking about the measured uphill meters during a record. The measured uphill meters are very close between 1030 and 1040.

What i mean are the CALCULATED ESTIMATED uphill meters. This value is shown when you select a track for navigation and later at the top left in the height-side.

  • which maps have you had activated when you made the calculation ??? specially interested in .dem map. .

  • Garmin DEM Map EU 2020.10

I hope Garmin will use the evelvation data in the imported track (if present) instead of the internal DEM map!?!

  • According my experience with 830 not. You must have .dem map activated to get sensible estimate from garmin device. If you import gpx file, it makes its own calculation anyway.

  • Can you please upload one of the two mentioned files here from quäldich?
