Edge 1040 Solar touch screen not reacting (but device not entirely frozen)

Hi Forum,

I upgraded from an Edge 1030 Plus to the new Edge 1040 Solar. Multiple times during rides the touch screen is not reacting to touches and swipes anymore. After some seconds (~20-120 seconds) it usually unfreezes itself and works again. But this pattern repeats during the ride multiple times.

I made a video of one of the instances that this happens: https://photos.app.goo.gl/LTc6E7FXPuV38yMu5

You can see that I was riding and that the Edge thought I was not on track anymore and offered me to reroute or pause navigation. It is not reacting to my touches of the button "pause navigation". Also any other input on the touch screen is not registered at all. FYI: It does not only happen when a popup comes up, it also happens randomly and I only notice because I try to swipe to the next data screen (which then does not work) or when I try to open the swipe-down-menu. The device itself still reacts on hardware-button-presses but not on touch screen presses and swipes anymore.

Usually it unfreezes after a while. Sometimes I need to hard reset the device mid ride.

Do I have a faulty device? Do I need to send it back? Or is this just very bard firmware?

Best, Reto

Edit: I am on firmware 12.16.

  • I will have to retract my previous statements about 14.12 beta working. :( It worked fine on my first ride, but today the problem appeared again unfortunately.

I discovered it about an hour and a half into the ride when an alert came up saying my Di2 battery was low. I could not dismiss the popup and the touch screen did not react to anything I did.

Switching pages with the Di2 buttons worked (although both "Previous page" and "Next page" does the exact same thing in 14.12, but that's another issue), as well as pressing hardware buttons (start/stop and lap).

Holding the Power off button displays the screen asking if you want to Power off. Here the touch screen reacts immediately and the device powers off. Powering it on again and starting the activity does not fix the problem however, and the touch screen remains unresponsive.

After the ride I was able to click Save after tapping the button about 50 times in rapid succession, and I could press a couple of more buttons, but I had to constantly tap the same button in rapid succession for quite a while before getting a reaction from the device.

    Paired sensors:

    • Garmin Speed Sensor
    • 4iiii dual-side Power meter
    • Wahoo Tickr X HR monitor
    • Shimano Di2 (Ultegra 6800)

No connect IQ apps installed, other than what came with the device originally.

    Device paired to Android phone.

No course/navigation was active, but a fairly long segment (30km) was active when I noticed the problem.

I really hope to see a fix to this problem soon, because it is incredibly frustrating.

Edit: Just noticed they released 14.13 beta. No mention of this touch screen issue being fixed, but at least the next/previous button problem I experienced was fixed.

  • No 14.12 has not fixed the pause navigation issue it’s now a can of worms. Yes it has improved the power button icon hang on power off by 90% but it still happens. Yes in the process they have broken some of the functionality of the Edge remote.

  • Hi, I got now the replacement unit. I am still on 12.16 (the latest stable version, as far as I know). So far so good. I am on vacation with my MTB and I had the first long ride today. Did not experience any problems so far. I will report back when I have more experience.

  • I am having the same issue with my 1040 Solar. Screen unresponsive, buttons work though. Give it enough time and it will eventually accept touch input but will flake out again at random intervals... Please do update us on the newest Beta!

  • I've now done three rides of 90-180 minutes on 14.13 beta without experiencing the issue. I'm still not convinced it has been solved, but so far it has worked on that version.

    Edit: 4 successful rides.

  • Hi Reto, I am having the exact problems as you. Did you resolve yours? Thanks, Regards Karl

  • Hi Reto, I am having the same issues as you. Did you resolve yours? Regards Karl

  • I had the issue but much better on V14.20 although not perfect. Are you on the lates version of software  ?

  • I got a replacement device under warranty and updated to the newest firmware (no beta, only newest regular firmware version) and since then I did not notice the problem anymore.

As I got the firmware update on arrival of the replacement I am not sure whether the new firmware or the replacement device fixed the issue.

  • I have been on around 10 rides now since installing 14.13 beta, and subsequently the 14.20 release version. And since then I have not seen this problem again. So I'm hopeful it's gone now anyway. :)
