Features on Explore 2 not on 1040 - why?

I’ve been looking through the Garmin spec for the Explore 2 and the manual and am puzzled at some of the features that have been released with it but seem to have been omitted from the 1040.

I like the look of the ‘busy roads’ feature that warns when approaching a potentially dangerous road and marks it in red on the map. Wish that was on my Edge 1040… Guessing it must be generated from the map that’s loaded so maybe will come when Garmin map updates filter through? I’m on Europe 2021.20.

Also bizarre that Garmin included connection to the Tempe sensor on the Explore 2 (not on the 1040 though or any other Edge unit I’ve ever owned yet the Tempe has been around since the 1950s ;-)) and a music widget (not on the 1040) which would be good for using in smart trainer mode (which is on the 1040). And the fitness age and intensity minutes glances on the Explore 2 but not the 1040.

I would have thought the 1040 and Explore 2 must be on a common development cycle from their close release dates so why the scattergun approach to features for the higher end unit?

  • IMHO

Edge 1040 is for racing, Explorer 2 is for touring.
That is why the 1040 does not have some features like music or ‘busy roads' ...

  • But 1040 is a high end device so you should have both. And tempe support is important for training..knowing the Real ambient temperature and the impact in the VO2, training, recovery..

  • We can only anticipate what's next so everything that we are writing is pure guessing

1.Explore 2 will have new functionality that make sense for a specific target buyers ( example non avid training cyclist) , so to not cannibalize the sales with 1030 or 1040

    2. After a while , 1040 will introduce same functionality as Explore 2 or some of the functionality ,  as its only a software matter (see Forerunner 955 and Fenix 7 releases)

PS: My feeling is that Tempe  its already supported by any Garmin as most probably its ANT+ ,  or I am missing something

PS2: Device temperature should work without any external device

I really love how people asking for more and more functionalities  but in the other hand they open new topics with bugs and things that are not working

  • Tempe connects via ANT+ but a CIQ app is needed to visualize it during workout. At least for me and my 1040.

It can be used with the Epix2.

  • PS2: Device temperature should work without any external device

    /humor on:
device temperature works perfectly on Edge devices Grinning
    humor off/

It‘s the internal device temp of the barometric chipset which is shown - but it has nothing to do with ambiente temp, which - of course - you have meant.

  • temp worked on edge 810 and I assume on 1030

    Slight smile

yes of course that I don't care about device temperature barometric chipset :) or what temperature is in Nigeria

  • I also think people need to be realistic.  We could have had a perfect device (maybe a year or two from now), it would have all the functionality that every other device has on the market and more that we can think off (or not even yet). It would have been exceptionally configurable anyway people like and connect perfectly with everybody’s 3rd part hardware and software always.

Only slight problem. To achieve that we would probably be paying nearer $2000 and it may never come out.

I was surprised the new unit came out the same price as the 1030+. Thinking of new phone launches they always try and put the price up a bit.  I’m a “early adopter, realist”. I see these devices as quite complex given how much they can be configured, all the separate 3rd party hardware and software they need to connect to.  I’d say it’s very difficult to launch such a device and not have a few “field testing” reports. Even now Apple have released the latest iPhone software version early to large numbers of beta testers for that very reason of ironing out the issues.

  • With a 1040, the day I feel like touring, do I have to change the cycle computer? That's the explanation? hired!

  • A strange feature apparently NOT on the Explore 2 is the Virtual Partner unless it is going to be added in a future release (like the 1040 got in its first release), this alone might cause many VP haters to stampede to the Explore 2 rather than 1040, it didn't bother me and I found it useful at times. The artificially slightly crippled battery & lack of wi-fi are annoying omissions on the Explore 2 but for half the price I could probably live with these.
