Power symbol on screen

Twice, I have had a large power symbol appear on the screen of my 1040 Solar after turning it off.  Both times, it would not turn back on when I pushed the power button on the side and I couldn't get the power symbol on the screen to go away.  It appeared to be locked up.  I had to hold the power button for a 3 - 5 seconds which made the power symbol go away and a horizontal line appear about 1/3 of the way down the screen.  Then eventually the horizontal line went away and it looked like the screen of the 1040 finally turned off.  Has anyone seen this large power symbol appear on the screen?  If so, what does it mean and how do I get out of it?

Here is a picture of the power symbol on the screen:

  • I was also offered the option of prepaying the replacement to get it shipped straight away, and then get it reimbursed once my unit has been received by Garmin.

  • I now have exactly the same problem, when I record a ride, the device turns off also appears the power symbol and the device no longer responds. after holding down the power off button for 5 seconds then also comes this horizontal line.
I have now also contacted the Garmin support.
    Very annoying.

  • I have exactly the same problem. To me it looks like a firmware bug. I now shut it down hard (press the button on the left side for ~15sec) or let it just sleep if I intend to use the unit the next day anyway. If the problem persists for more than a month or so with newer firmware versions, I will also get it repaired/replaced under warranty.

  • Same issue here. I contacted Garmin this morning - gave them serial number etc - they said its a software bug and have to wait for an update....no offer of swapping the unit, unlike some people saying in other posts.

  • I received my replacement today -which apparently was sent more because of the battery drain rather than the power symbol issue. The replacement I received looks like a new unit, it came in a sealed box with all accessories.
Anyway…I used the new unit this afternoon and exactly same issue happening on this one too.

  • What software version do you have on the device?
I have since yesterday the latest beta version, but I have not yet tried whether the bug is fixed.

  • I've just had the same problem, latest firmware 12
My hunch is that it's still trying to sync or load something in the back ground.

I turned it on this morning to check battery level before I went out, so I could see how much it charged sitting in the sun. And turned it off again straight away. Came home to find the power symbol on the screen and battery depleted (was out for a few hours)
Tried the same turn on, turn off very quickly again now and it did it, but if I let it sit for a couple fo minutes on before I turn it off it doesn't do it.....

  • I have the latest official version (12.16 I think) on both devices.

  • I received mine two weeks ago, brand new replacement and so far no issues
