Right after starting up the 1040, the map screen is empty until it accquires GPS lock.
That seems reasonable. If the 1040 doesn't know where it is then it doesn't know what section of map to display.
However, I can't see this as a big problem as I've been impressed by the speed at which the 1040 locks onto satellites and has a location.
Yes, I'd agree to that it seems normal but I had the 830 and it always displays the map portion of my last known good GPS position.
Imagine, I could scroll around the map had it appear before it get a GPS lock and be able to find a spot for navigation before I go outside.
