Auto Pause does more that pause recording

Apart from being horrible slow to resume 2 - 3 second compared to the 1030. Auto pause does 2 additional things;

1) it places as pause icon on the screen, and it dims the screen making it very hard to read. if you want screen saver to save battery which i understand make it configurable. i don't want it as every set of traffic lights. slow resume means a dimmed screen that is hardly readable for 2 - 3 seconds

2) it stops the 1040 from responding to the Di2 buttons. scenario. I come the the trafic lights, stop and want a quick look at the map, pause is on and i can change screen. Use my right hand to switch pause off , and it's back on by the time i reach the di2 button - almost immediately Grrr......

I wonder what else it does?

Ye, the auto-pause information & screen dimming seems to long. I stop to see where to go next but can't do it instantly due to this.

Have you tried the 14.xx releases that are posted on this forum. They have changed the way auto-pause works when using GPS and some of the Di2 button functionality.

Thanks. Seen that. People are writing about navigation bugs, so for now I'm going to stick with stable 12.16 and maybe set it to 2km/h in app, as someone suggested.

aweatherall yes it does seem better, and the Di2 button "hold" for map now works"

+1 to this. Just got my 1040, and the Pause screen, by dimming the entire screen (over my map page), makes it hard to see where I'm going next. Behavior was much better on my 1030 (not the plus), where there was no dimming or blocking of the screen with giant pause symbol. Hope (but don't hold my breath) that this might be changed or made configurable.

I don't want my ride time and average speed to reflect stopping for pedestrians and at red lights

Both Strava and Garmin Connect show both moving (ride) time as well as elapsed time. Garmin Connect also shows average speed and you can easily calculate it with Strava. If you must have this while your riding, consider using AppBuilder and take advantage of some helpful hints from ridefar.info.

FWIW, I've never auto-paused as I prefer to have a continuous record of heart rate and to avoid the inevitable nuisances of auto-pause. Furthermore, I have always selected 1 second recording (moot with the 1040). I'm wont to do post-ride data analysis and having everything every second makes my life easier.

I totally agree! The giant pause icon and the greyed out screen are totally annoying and useless. If you stop,it is clear you are paused.

I often ride courses off-road that I briefly plan on PC and transfer on the device. It happens I have to change the path or look for alternatives and is so difficult and boring to access the map with the icon that continually reappears. I agree to get it on screen just few seconds when you stop and then disappear or greatly reduce in size and move in a corner to let you freely access the map.

Very interesting approach, and good food for thought. Thanks for the idea. I'll give AppBuilder 5 (now supporting the 1040) a shot. For anyone else trying VirtualDynamo's link, make sure you read the comments, which describe how to do a formula without relying on auto pause.Garmin still should redesign the auto pause page though!
