Installed OSM map from Garmin Express but it didn't show up in Map Information

Hi all,

As the title said, I installed a map from Garmin Express (OSM City Navigator Singapore Malaysia Vietnam Philippines 2021.30) on my Edge 1040 (bought it in the USA) but it didn't show up in the map information, only DEM Map showed. Please help!!!

Thanks

  • Hi,

It worked for me on the 1040 SOLAR.

Just rename the the gmapsupp.img and drop it in the garmin folder.

Map will be shown in the list and you need to tick this map 'on'.

  • Yeah I tried this method but it didn't work.

  • if it doesn't show up, then possibly the file is not a map-file or corrupt?

  • Hmm, I don't think so because I downloaded it by using Garmin Express. I also tried to redownload the map so many times btw.

  • I can reproduce this. Garmin Express lets you install this optional map, but the map never actually works on the device. Also, if you install the HK/Macau map (also via Garmin Express), it causes the Edge to freeze if you try to zoom into those places on the map. You can work around these issues by moving to a different country.

  • This!!! Exactly what I've experience in the last few weeks with my new 1040.

That's terrible because in the support center, Garmin said: "The Edge 1030 Plus and Edge 1040 Series have worldwide mapping available at no extra cost with access to map updates for life."

  • I have a 1030 plus and this issue occurred with the last map updates sent earlier this year. I’m based in Singapore and ended up visiting the service center and they were surprised to see it happen because sure they suspected user error.  A brand new 1030 plus was tested and after the map was updated the issue also occurred.

They have had a ticket open with Garmin since March and today when I followed they said that the issue is also occurring in the new 1040 (hence I’m updated here) and that Garmin couldn’t replicate it so they have sent them an APAC unit with the issue to look it.

The really weird thing is that if you install basecamp on your PC  you can see the maps so something isn’t right with the format and/or the device s/w.

I was provided with another map which works well and I downloaded 3rd party maps maps for now. Note this only seems to affect the OSM AP maps from what we can tell during the testing we did on random maps.

I wonder if someone takes a working copy of the map and hosts, maybe it would work from manually copying to the Garmin folder? I wouldn't try hosting without Garmin saying it's okay since it might be licensed to owners of the device.  Perhaps if you know someone locally?

You might also try deleting anything in this folder on your PC and re-download.

    C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map

-I only have trailforks in there, so I don't know for sure if the 1040 saves OSM maps in this location, but I believe the 830 did.  If the maps are STILL in that directory on your PC, the 're-download' option in Garmin Express did not truely "re-download" until I removed those files from my PC when I owned an 830.  Otherwise it just copied the existing files from my PC back to the edge without pulling a fresh copy from the servers.

If possible I would delete any files from that PC directory and then re-launch Garmin Express and try installing the maps again.  If it is a wide-spread issue this might not work.  But perhaps if it's a corrupt file this could help.

  • any idea where they are on a Mac?

  • I found out that there is a only a limited number of maps that can be found on the maps list in the 1040 regardless if they are set active or not and this has also nothing to do with available space on the device. I copied three OSM maps directly to the 1040, but only one showed. Deleted several of the preinstalled inactive Garmin maps and then all my OSM-maps became visible to make active or inactive.
