Switch from Wahoo Bolt II to Edge 1040

Hi,

I used to ride with my Wahoo Elemnt Bolt but was missing a couple of features, like lights management, sync to Garmin Connect, Climb Pro and a larger device. So I recently bought a 1040 and tried it for some time. This is what I experienced:

- I almost died a couple of times during my commutes to find the right menu. Why do I need to have a masters degree to understand the logic behind the menu structure? Example: To turn off sounds, it is not enough to turn off sounds but I also have to turn off the turn-by-turn prompts in courses.

- I am using RideWithGPS routes. They just sync to my Element Bolt. Not with the 1040. I need to unpin-snyc-pin-sync. And when I change a route, I need to unpin-sync-pin-sync again. Very annoying.

- Turn on lights during a ride (without an additonal IQ app)? You have the switch in a car directly at your hand. But on the 1040? Swipe->click->swipe->swipe->swipe ... and then ... find the extra-super-small button to turn on/off lights

- Sound for turn-by-turn navigation on the device but not on the mobile phone? Could not figure out how to do that?

- Why am I forced to ride with a virutal partner??

- I could not figure out how to show the radar-bar always on the screen, even if there is not car behind me (to distinguish between a not-connected radar and a connected radar).

- I also have a Specialized Tero E-Bike. The e-bike field shows a totally different remaining battery percentage than the bike does.

There is probably much more. And I am sure there is somewhere a sub-sub-structure in the menu from where you can click and swipe a couple of times to change a setting that you can't find again when you need to change it back.

What I really like are the large display, the map details, climb pro, GPS accuracy. But why does make Garmin it soooo hard to love their devices?

I give it a couple of days more but will then switch back to my Wahoo Elemnt.

Best,

Frank

  • Now Edge remote enable control the lights

  • I think you have to accept that moving platforms is going to need a re-training of your way of doing things.  It’s like people moving from Android or Apple and expecting them both to work the same.  They just simply don’t. What you usually find though is 2-3 weeks in you just readjust and then get used to the “other” way, then going back you get all mixed up again.

Some of your questions are going to be that’s just the way it is.  Others I think do work but you haven’t figured it out yet.  For example I had for some reason turned on turn notifications on my phone the other day and was wondering why I could keep hearing my phone doing something in my back pocket. I then realised it was actually turn notifications.

Light controls this (for supported lights) can quickly be accessed from the swipe down menu (where the sensors etc come up). It’s one of the menus in there.

Don’t know what you mean by forced to ride with virtual partner?  You select this is riding a course.  You don’t have to have it.

I’ve no doubt if I got the Wahoo I’d find it very difficult to work my way around as I’m now so used to the way Garmin arranges things.
