Just a simple question i hope :-)

So, I've had the edge 830 for a few years and to be honest unless I am planning a ride in a totally unknown region I very really use it, I prefer to use my Fenix 6 and even with bad eye sight i find it very easy to navigate with.

On that note i decided to waste some money today and purchased the 1040 solar thinking it might be a grade above my 830 and might get me into some more adventures as my MTB mojo has been lacking recently.

I tried it today and let it calculate me a small 15 mile route just to see how it looked when navigating.

1st of all I was hoping the navigation and view would be larger than the 830 allowing my poor eyesight to actually see the information clearly, what i found was a bigger screen with more small stuff on it :-( .

Question number one. Can this unit have the 3d map version i had on the 830 giving a big fat arrow and large directions ?

Question number two . I cannot for the life of me get this unit to except a UK post code for navigation, it just says no information available, i feel i have tried all options within the navigation menu but hopefully not.

Any info on the above much appreciated .

  • 1- I believed Garmin dropped this feature.

2- I don't think you can look up UK post codes. Does that work on your 830?

  • You can zoom in on the map and configure zoom level somewhere in the settings. 3D is no longer available.

  • This doesn't make text bigger.

  • Thanks for the info guys.

I've just booted up my 830, yes it does recognise uk post codes.

:-(  its no big deal but I've now lost a post code search and the 3d navigation feature for my trouble lol. Maybe i will find some useful feature to justify my upgrade from the 830, Looks like I may have to ride with glasses even though for some strange reason I can see the Fenix 6 watch nice and clear when navigating :-) .

  • I forgot to say when Garmin actually bring out a mapping solution to avoid foot paths in the uk with torturous styles to lift your bike over that's me all in :-) .

  • That might be a map issue. Garmin may be assuming cycling is allowed for the way. They probably should be tagged as "cycling not allowed".

  • Postcode search sort of works. You can enter the first letter number combinations and then the next number (or select it). It then asks for the road.  This appears to be only roads in that postcode area. Then a house number.

So not “full” postcode search we normally get.

  • Confirmed. Post code search does work as explained above.

  • It does, its fine, to be honest its not very often i need it on a mtb and if i do its workable .

2nd ride out with the unit today and I'm happy, the main reason I purchased the unit was navigation and its function to re route off course by not sending you back on the path home missing out 20 miles of the good stuff, once was enough to not rely on the 830 after a holiday in Scotland had my adventure totally ruined .

It doesn't on mine. My screen for postcodes only allows me to input numbers. Very poor from Garmin on such an expensive device.
