Auto Pause/Start Working HORRIBLY

Okay, did my first ride with the Edge 1040, standard model, not solar. And I have to say that the Auto Pause and Auto Resume are abysmal! I am used to my Edge 1000, where it takes almost exactly 2.5 seconds both to auto pause and auto resume again, once I get over the auto pause speed. I am not expecting miracles here! I get that these devices aren't perfect, and I never complained about the Edge 1000's 2.5 second start/stop times, because GPS requires cell data, or at least communication with satellites, and it seems reasonable to expect delays in things like auto starting and stopping.

I was on with Tech Support (lol did almost as much phone troubleshooting while stopped on my first 1040 ride) and they couldn't figure out what was wrong. I tried setting the pause speed a little lower. It was 5 MPH, but I dialed it back to 3 MPH, hoping that would help. It didn't. Well, it helped starting, but only by a second or two. They couldn't figure out what was going on.

Basically it takes TEN SECONDS from when I get pedaling more than the pause speed for the 1040 to restart, and almost the same thing, 8 seconds from when I come to a complete stop, to pause.

Now after I hung up with tech support, and continued my ride, I also tried setting the GPS to most accurate, which if I remember right is regular GPS + Glonass? but I could be wrong. Either way, once I did that, the projected battery life immediately plummeted, which is perfectly fine by me. I don't need anywhere near 100 hours of battery, so I like to max out all the settings.

After hanging up with Garmin, I also noticed something interesting, and this I believe is what's causing the problem, but I have no idea what's causing the cause of the problem. I noticed that whenever I come to a complete stop, it takes the 1040 at least 8 full seconds to count down from whatever speed it was just registering to the auto-pause speed. This does NOT happen with my Edge 1000. The two+ seconds pause on that unit is just I assume the device catching up with the data, which I expect and am okay with. But taking upwards of ten seconds just to acknowledge that I have come to a stop is very weird to me.

  • Are you using a speed sensor? Or are you using the GPS as a speed sensor? In the latter, there might be a lag. I use a speed sensor (from Garmin) and auto pause/start works just fine, like with the 1030 and 1030 Plus I had before.

  • Definitely seeing this when using gps for speed. My “old” 130plus has no gps speed lag and auto pause and start are great. Ugh. Do I haaaaaave to get a wheel sensor to have this thing perform anywhere near the cheapest edge model?!

    the 1040 isn’t fully baked.

  • Same here, auto pause very slow, but I know this is a garmin device, so the basic functions will work only after years...

  • I have one on my bike, but I haven't bothered to replace the battery in a long time, because I thought it was unnecessary. It came with my Edge 1000 bundle pack with that and a chest heart rate monitor. I will try changing the battery and hope that the little flat battery didn't explode inside of it after several years of not being used. I never needed it with the Edge 1000, though.

  • same here, it's crap ... at least compared to the responsive auto-pause on edge 830. Lots of lag on 1040.

  • I am having the same issues with auto pause and start on my Edge 1040 Solar and I am getting the exact same lag times. I got so frustrated with auto pause and start that I turned it off and manually pause and restart using the button on the bottom. I rode last night for the first time manually pausing and restarting and it worked out great! It would be nice if Garmin could fix this issue with a firmware update.

  • I am not noticing any auto-pause/restart lag on my 1040 (non-solar), but I also use speed sensors on all my bikes.

  • As @TheFitnessGuru I suspect you have a speed sensor (or you should). Check the battery, and if you don’t have one, get one and fix your “issue.” Using GPS for alone is typically what induces the “lag” you are describing.

  • I normally use my bike's built-in speed sensor. Had a bike last week w/o speed sensor for several rides and auto-pause/restart worked just fine for me. No noticeable lag (at least not one that is more than "GPS induced"). Edge 530 had about the same "lag" when w/o speed sensor.

  • Well, I put a fresh battery in my speed sensor, and did a ride today. Auto-pause and auto-resume works much better now. It still isn't perfect, nor do I expect it to be. There is a fraction of a second delay between the speed sensor data and the 1040 registering a stop and a start, but that is just probably normal for Bluetooth connections. I can't complain, as it is much, much better than with GPS data alone.
