Is the screen contrast in the solar option really worse in heavy light compared to the regular 1040? I still hesitate to buy the solar version as visibility of the screen is key issue to me.

I’ve found the solar version quite easy to read, particularly in bright sunlight. It helped me tremendously when I angled the display completely level such that it is not directly facing me, it points straight up to the sky. For reference I also own the Hammerhead Karoo 2 and previously hated the 1030 Plus I tried out. Whatever Garmin did to refresh the UI, it worked, the 1040 is so much easier to see and understand what’s going on when navigating (I’m using the high contrast profile). The only time I would say the display gets kind of dark is when the sun is behind me and high in the sky, throwing my own shadow into the head unit.
