Any way to add POIs on a really, really long tour made in a different route builder

I'm racing ultra distances, and make my routes in Komoot. Currently I'm into a route that's 4100 kms long, and divided into 32 smaller parts.

I'm going into territory that I absolutely don't know, and would like to include certain POIs, like gas stations, stores, and stuff.

However, I'm really reluctant to put my routes into Garmin Connect and add the POIs from there. Is there any other way to actual get my Edge 1040 to list a list of POIs without having the route in Garmin Connect and add them there?

  • This 530 discussion has examples of the screens etc related to "Course Points" so you can decide if they are worthwhile for you to use, page 3 includes the new format of course points on the Garmin map, these would be the same as on the 1040

  • Your options:

    1. Add the POIs as "course points". These will show up with the course they are associated with. (You can't use Komoot for this.)

    2. Add the POIs as "locations". In this case, you just need to copy a list of waypoints in a GPX file to the \Garmin\NewFiles folder. There's a limit to the number of locations (like 200).

    3. Use POIs in a GPI file. This is more work but you can have lots of them and even have custom icons for them.  https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=lfiKohFF2UAo3eaO9vHYp6
  • I don't know if you can add them in Komoot as I don't use it.

Komoot appears to only produce GPX files. GPX files can't have course points.

These sound like interesting approaches while Komoot doesn't support anything but GPX. Thanks, I'll give these a try.

  • I sent a request to Komoot, and the answer is as follows:

Thank you for your feedback! At the moment we only export to GPX, but we are always happy about new suggestions and ideas for improvement. I forwarded your message internally. However, we cannot give you a time frame for a possible implementation of your suggestion in the future.

If I get another reply, I'll try to post an update here.

  • This is the exact scenario i have, in fact it why is was i paid money for the larger battery and solar.

Basically. if garmin could suport all the RWGPS feature is would be the number one product for this genre of riding.

    What RWGPS features?

  • I am having a very big learning curve  with what the 1040  can do , and the terminology.

Notifications, for course points, custom queues,  custom poi's, and selected near by poi's

One interesting challenge is, i get the GPX from the organiser.  I can leave the course, but i have to return to the place I left.  . so I need water and there is a near by POI,  I want to go there, off corse, and then return to the place i left. same for a store, camp site etc.  I get to decide which of these i want to use, but not supode to change the course.   currently i use my garmen for the corse and my phone for the extras. but my phone is not designed for this kind of thing and eats battry

RWGPS can do al lot of this, but not all. I have however put requets/suggestions in and they have been warmly   welcomed

    regards

    Julian

  • You only get notifications for course points.

RWGPS has cues and it writes these as course points to TCX and FIT files.

RWGPS automatically generates cues for turns. You can add your own custom cues (but you need a subscription). These custom cues get included as course points.

Garmin Connect (the website) also lets you add custom cues. The custom cues should be written out as course points. I'm not sure if the cues for turns are included (Garmin changes what they do for the different devices).

RWGPS doesn't seem to write the POIs to any files. There was a very round-about way to get pop-ups for POIs based on distance but the newer Edges don't support this.

You can only have one navigation "target" at a time. So, if you want to navigate to a location/POI that is not on the course, the device would no longer be following the course (it would be following a route to the location/POI.

If you are leaving the course, you can drop a pin on where you left it. You can then navigate back to that location. Once you were at that location, you would reload the course you were on (but don't select "navigate to start?").

If your location/POI was close to the course, you could just reload the course and ride to it (using the map).

  • Thanks for that. I dont have any races at the moment, but i have some big multi day rides. Will keep testing and providing feedback.
