Micro SD Card?

Okay, I get the feeling I know the answer to this already, but I just received my 1040, and I was going to just transfer the Micro SDHC card with all my courses from the 1000 to my new 1040. I can't find a slot for the card, nor anything in the instructions. I know that the onboard storage is way higher than the Edge 1000, so am I right in assuming there is no slot for a micro SD and I just have to use the onboard storage? It's a minor inconvenience to manually send all my plethora of courses to the 1040 via Garminconnect.com, but not a huge big deal if that's what I have to do. If there is a slot for a card, can someone tell me roundabout where it is? On the 1000 it is on the bottom of the device, adjacent to the micro USB input, but I don't see anything on the 1040.

Thanks all! :)

  • No SD card slot on the 1040. There also wasn't one on the 1030. To load courses without Garmin Connect, you can copy them into the NewFiles folder by using the file browser once connected to your desktop computer.

  • Ha! I didn't even think of that. That's how I loaded all my courses onto my 1000, now that I recall after reading your post. Thanks! LMAO.

  • Minor correction, there was on on the 1030. It was on the back at the top.  They removed it altogether on the 1030 plus.

  • There also wasn't one on the 1030.

The 1030 does have a SD card slot ,.. I don't think the 1030+ has one though.

  • Just a quick question. Why not copy them directly to the "Courses" directory on the 1040? I remember from the last time I did this, one of the times I had to get a replacement for my 1040 over the years. I always copied the content of the courses directory to the new files. I just forget why this is necessary, or if it actually is?

Edit: By the way, I did it your way, because that's how I remember doing it on every occasion I needed to copy courses from one Edge 1000 to a new one, and it worked seamlessly. But I am asking out of curiosity because intuitively it seems like you should copy from Courses to Courses, even though that doesn't seem to be the case in Garmin cycling computers.

  • You should copy them to the NewFiles folder. The unit does additional processing of files placed there before it moves them to the required directory.

  • In case You run out of space, there could be a cloud connection paired with phone. One would store some maps on it and when needed to use during a cource - just turn the BT / Wifi on and phone would stream certain one to the GPS device.
