1040 Solar at end of ride never lists heart rate sensor in list of sensors

I’ve noticed that the 1040 now lists the sensors used for the ride in the page shown after one saves a ride. However, it never shows my heart rate sensor. This is true for both my old Garmin chest strap and my first gen Scosch armband heart rate meter.

it does list my wahoo speed sensor, my power meter and my Inreach.  The ride graphs shows it was talking to the heart rate meter the entire ride as expected.

I only noticed this as I realized it isn’t showing any data points for vo2max since I switched to the 1040, so trying to determine why. Seems unlikely that I’ve done no rides that don’t meet the requirement of 20 minutes with  70%+ of my max heart rate, though will research my rides about that.

But seems odd it won’t list my heart rate meters even though using it!

  • Hmm so it is the case that my rides since I started using the 1040 are all at endurance to moderate heart rates so not hitting the 70% threshold needed for Garmin vo2max calculations. I’ll have to focus on that for the next ride to see if that shows the vo2max. But still doesn’t explain why the heart rate sensors not listed at the end of the ride….

  • Is the HRM paired over ANT or BLE?

  • This is normal behavior.

Source: Have used Garmin HRM1G, HRM-Run, Polar H10 and a variety of other chest and armband HRMs for the last 5 years with Garmin Fenix and Forerunner watches. There has NEVER been an indication in the saved activity of an external HRM being used.

The Garmin HRM-Pro is the only HRM I've seen show up as a sensor in a saved activity.

See attached screen caps - one of a ride with an Edge 1040 paired to a Polar H10, the other an Edge 530 ride paired to an HRM-Pro.

  • Checking the details of each sensor

    Old Scotsch(ant+)

    Software version 0.00

    Manufacturer Num 83

    Model # 2

Serial # serial number was shown

if I use Bluetooth software version shown as 2.4 and other fields empty. Don’t normally use Bluetooth connection, will try on next ride to see if that gets shown in sensor list.

old Garmin ANT heart rate strap

    same fields

    sw version  0.30

    manufacturer 13

    model # 2

    serial number was shown

    no battery status for either.

As other people are reporting this, I guess is normal. But seems odd that they list all other sensors except for HR. I wonder if it is in fact the lack of battery status that results in this. Anyone have an HR monitor with battery status other than the Garmin HRM-Pro that can tell us if that gets shown in the end of ride list?

  • Sending the battery status and is not a requirement I think of the ANT+ HRM profile. If the HRM does not send it then there is nothing the Edge can do.

  • Yep, I’m just wondering if that is why not shown in the list. Seems like this is not an actual problem, just an odd inconsistency in the Garmin post ride display.

  • Not really an inconsistency. If the sensor does not report a battery status then the post ride display cannot really report one.

  • I have a Wahoo Tickr and it does not show up on the sensor list either.  Another interesting note is I used my Instinct Solar watch to broadcast HR for one ride and it shows up on the sensor list, but battery status was listed as "unknown".

  • Lol I’m embarrassed to say that I hadn’t noticed the sensor list is showing the battery status of those sensors shown.
