Background: I've used Garmin aviation equipment for the last 20+years and my consumer-market Garmin history starts with the StreetPilot i5, GPSmap 60CSx, eTrex, Oregon/Montana.
In the last few years I've had Vivoactives, Forerunners, and my current Fenix 7X with the Edge 1040 being my first Garmin bike computer.
The overwhelming feeling I get is the Edge is the illegitimate love-child of hiking GPSes from 10 years ago and relatively current wearables.
The hardware is outstanding but it seems like the Edge software team operates completely independently from the fitness wearables.
Current frustrations with the Edge, coming from a Fenix:
- Can't customize text responses.
- Can't disable lap key and make it a "back to home screen"
- EDIT - testing this with screen locked as I may have fat-fingered a save while paused... Can't disable auto-save when paused - I lost a ride with this one - rather had to start a new ride
- Can't add more than two datafields to the map page without third-party CIQ app/datafield(?!)
- Can't add a graphical "training effect gauge" on an Edge?
I guess I expected more harmonization between consumer products. The Edge has a a huge learning curve I didn't experience switching between seemingly very different wearables like the Vivoactive HR and Forerunner 935.
Anyone know of good reference guides - "Edge for Dummies"? I'd rather not run into any more issues mid-ride.
I'd love to see how long time Edge users configure their screens - I'm pretty adept with a Garmin wearable but nothing seems the same on the Edge.
