Keeping the 1040 asleep or off while charging appears to be not possible

Hey all

If I plug the 1040 in to charge, and then turn it off, the next time I get near it, GC appears to turn it back on.

If I sleep the 1040, the same thing happens.

I've tried every combo I can think of to shut it down and charge it, and it just keeps waking up or turning on.

  • Like yours mine boots when plugged into a charger. Then I'm able to turn it off and then 1040 shows a charging screen. At the end of charging there is a turn-off beep and the unit is completely off.

  • Yeah that's how my 1030 behaved. But my 1040 keeps turning on. Maybe it's something with the charger or cable or something. I'll monkey with it.

  • I have the same problem as you. Had you then solved it?

  • I did a test and it seems that the problem has been resolved with the Beta software 14.12. Now works as it should. When in a sleep mode the screen is completely off and when the device is turned off only Garmin logo and the battery charging status is displayed.

  • Yes same for me now

  • Mine does same thing and I've had mine since last Oct. If I plug it into a wall outlet, the main menu comes up, I turn it off (and it should go to %charge/charging) it turns the device completely off. What I did find, is that if I plug the device into my PC, it does what it's supposed to do, it loads maps, etc., then goes straight to % charge/charging and is like my old 1030. I also checked this, plugging the 1040 (I have solar) into an Anker battery bank and it is just fine, loads maps, data, etc., then goes straight to % charge/charging. So I think the problem lies in source as I have no problem plugging it into my PC (or even my Laptop) and an Anker battery charge bank.

  • Run50 i just replied to you on the other feed. Remember your usb port on your pc or mac outputs very low power. That low power is charging your edge 1040. If your using some sort of power bank to charge your edge and a bunch of other stuff like bike lights, radars and etc, those power banks are likely outputting a higher power output and your garmin edge doesn’t like that.  Try a low power brick that has an output similar to what your pc usb is putting out.

  • I don’t use a power bank to charge my 1040; tried an Anker power bank but it does same thing as plugging the 1040 into a wall outlet (U.S.). The device works as it should on my PC when I plug it into USB port, turns on main menu then turns off and goes just to charging display.

  • If you’re charging from your wall outlet you either have a built-in usb port or you’re using a brick. What are you using?
