bug report maybe? - Recorded data oddity with 1040

Since I've been testing the 1040 I've noticed two more oddities related to data.

1) Strava: In strava activities sync and are recorded. Even though the activity shows the mileage, the mileage isn't being registered for total miles ridden (miles this week, total this year etc). When I use the 830, this does not happen and it appears correctly. Is it possible that there is a data sync problem with 1040? This is confirmed across multiple activities so it isn't a single outlier. - I've reported this to Strava also. No response yet.

2) Garmin Connect: When completing activities with 1040 there is no data point logged for vo2max. I can see the HRM and PM data logged as expected, but it doesn't update vo2 if I use 1040. This also works just fine if I use 830.

  • On point 1. Your device does not sync to strava. Your device syncs with Garmin connect, check if your activity is fine there ... Garmin connect pushes the activity to strava.

On point 2. What do you mean here exactly? My expected behavior is that vo2max data is updated when it is "changed", for me this works the same with the edge 1040. So only if it is lower or higher than the previous activity it will register this in Garmin connect and on-device as a point.

  • Do you have Pwm?

fo me vo2 max works just fine, 44 years and 55 vo2 max, going to 60 hopfuly

  • Strikes me that both of those problems coud be caused by files being processed as the wrong activity type; this would cause the milage to not be added to your Strava cycling profile, and since Connect processes figures for cycling / running VO2 max seeparately, your cycling VO2 max would also not update.

    Anyway, just a thought.

  • Yes. pwm is present and works. The activity records full power data accurately.

With the 830 it adds a data point for every day that I ride if I look at the chart in Garmin Connect. With the 1040 there is no datapoint at all. It shows the last ride on the 830 as the last data point.

  • 1. Understood. Data itself is fine and present. Something is unique/different about the 1040 data or how garmin is updating it. Still waiting for Strava to respond to the support request. The data is accurate in Garmin Connect and Strava. Data from the 1040 is just being excluded from totals. Beats me how/why. Hoping Garmin and/or Strava fix it as silently as they broke it.

Notably, activities with 830 work as expected with no issues.

  • This seems plausible although I'm not sure what to do about it. 830 and 1040 are connected to same Connect account. One device updates. One doesn't.

  • If you edit the ride in Strava, is it shown as a "Ride"in the sport dropdown, or as nothing / something else? In the detailed activity view in Connect, does it show one of the cycling categories at the top left ("Road cycling" is the default for me). or something else? If these are correct, then this isn't the problem.

  • I have both activity types on both devices, only the 1040 presents this problem.

This evening I specifically rode with the 830. Sure enough, the miles show up in Strava, no manual edit required.

Your comment inspired me. I tried editing the activity type on Strava. Changed from Ride -> Virtual Ride. Saved. Edited from Virtual Ride -> Ride. Saved. Each activity updated this way now registers as it should.

So there is a manual workaround. Toggle the ride type. Strange problem. Appears to have affected every 1040 ride I have logged so far.

  • I got this from Strava.

It looks like you have recorded one of the new Trail Sports Types.

Unfortunately, the New Trail Sports will not count towards the current Ride, Run, and E-Bike Ride Goals.

So there must be something about how the 1040 is configured? I can't figure it out. Why are 1040 activities being recorded as the trail sports types?

  • Was the profile you are using imported as part of the set-up process?

Would mind sharing the profile you are using?
