New 1040: The Good and the Bad So Far

Got a non-solar unit today.  First ride was 50 mi.

Good:

 - near zero software issues of any kind.  That includes transfer of all prior info from my 1030 and pairing with all sensors (HR, power, Di2, lights)

 - Interface is better and much faster

 - Like the new font/screen look

 - Stamina meter function felt about right.  I've been using it on my Epix and it seemed to learn me pretty quickly

 - Cycling ability nailed me as "endurance specialist".  I'd have laughed it was "hill climber"

Bad:

 - Di2 button hooked up to screen fwd/back worked sporadically.  Not sure what this is

 - Di2 screen swap did not work most of the time when in the top down menu screens (where segments, light control screens are)

 - HR zones were incorrect for the ride.  Pretty sure this one is on me though.

I'm used to being a Garmin "beta tester" ie early adopter so I expected much worse.  Unit seems to work pretty well so far.  Will see how it does with the setups on other bikes.

  • PS:  one good I forgot.  I had my earphone connected to my phone for music.  When I hit the lap button, it announced the lap and time over my headphones!   This bodes well for everything from music controls via the Gamin and/or announcing of directions on a course.  Wondering if those are on the roadmap?

  • Not seen any issues with the Di2 buttons myself. Working fine. I did once have an issue with the whole connection and a 1030. I’d mounted the Bluetooth module in the seat tube and it never got a good connection.  Since I’ve had it mounted in the handlebars never been a problem since. Maybe try removing it and adding again to be sure.

  • My di2 button works as intended. In fact, I feel it's way more responsive than on my previous edge 830. Update: my fly is located in the seatpost.
