Just happy :-)

Hi,

after some Garmin devices (GPS 12 Heart eyes, Edge 520, Edge 530, Index Smart Scale, Vivomove HR, Vivomove Luxe), sometimes bought directly after release, I am used to some of the "quality" of Garmin software and have witnessed many, many bugs and have also commented again and again here. I have also read the forum here before buying the Edge 1040 and decided to buy despite the threads - and what can I say? I am after numerous mountain bike tours very happy with it. That's something that must also be said Blush

The setup via Connect app went well, even if there were initial difficulties with the Bluetooth connection and the Edge on software 10.xx now and then hung briefly. Regardless of whether the competition has long offered this, it is in any case pleasant to have this now on the Edge. Sensors (e-bike, heart rate, SRAM AXS) were detected flawlessly, connection is also stable on the tours. I do not use CIQ fields, so these bugs do not affect me. Display is super, touch operation with gloves also, mud on the display (mountain biker) no problem. Endless battery life. Device runs stable so far and is very fast. Navigation runs great, connection with cell phone for messages also. Tracking also ran flawlessly so far. Temperature data seems to me so far also correct. The fact that you can call up a lot of important data directly on the Edge is great - and the synchronization with the data and activities from the watch also works great. Sync via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth works perfectly.

I have certainly not exhausted all the features, but what I have tried so far, ran wonderfully. In this respect: Thumbsup, I am so far very happy with the Edge 1040. A great successor to my Edge 530, which I also liked in itself.

  • Thanks for posting your thoughts.  I recently upgraded from an Edge 530 (and an 800 prior to that) and am still struggling a bit with buyer's remorse.  I have yet to experience a true wow factor in the difference in features between the 1040 non-solar over a 530 that justifies the cost.   However, I admit I need many more rides to experience the 1040 so this will probably resolve itself.

I am also an active mountain biker and I am a bit concerned about how the larger-sized unit will fare in a crash.  I still have those.  :(

  • I think there's no easy answer on that. I really liked the Edge 530; it worked quite well. Yet there were these little things that brought me to the 1040:

    - buttons were sometimes hard to press or I used the wrong ones. Even after years this happened to me. Buttons are so unintuitive nowadays and hard to use after all - entering data or looking for routes was a pain in the ass. It worked. Nothing more.

    - small display, hard to navigate: Sometimes I ride overlapping routes and the 530 made it hard to correctly follow them. The small map was sometimes hard to read as was zooming or moving it.

    - Calculating routes was terribly slow when not in the cache.

    - I wanted to see more data after my ride - yeah, sure, I could view then on my mobile, but then I would have to wait for the Edge to sync with Connect, take the gloves off, get the mobile out of my pocket, ...

    - Stamina and Power guide looked like features that I wanted to have. Yeah, sure, I normally feel how fit I am and whether I can push more, but, well... ;-)

I loved the larger touchscreen from the first minute on. Starting a route takes a glimpse of the eye. The device feels responsive and is easy to use. The map is much easier to read, especially on trails. Power guide is a nice feature. For me it is worth the money. OTOH, mountainbiking is my #1 activity and I do it nearly every day so I justify investments often with that exact argument. I mean, I ride the XX1 AXS group and no, I'm not a pro. Worth it? Shrug♂️

I crash every now and then, but my bike never rolled over or fell onto the bar, so I never had problems with broken Edges. Hopefully never will have Wink

  • Great Post.  I have mine up and running but have not ridden with it yet. I will tomorrow with any luck.  Then a long gravel race Sunday.  Its nice to see the positive!

    Thanks.

  • I receive my 1040 Solar next week.  I'm upgrading from the 830.  Thanks for the report.  There seems to be a few unhappy 1040 users, but I know Garmin will work things out as they always do.  There will always be a few people bitching about something.

  • Hi great post, I’ve been using my 1040 for 3 weeks now, today the device received its first auto software, now I’m hopeful this will sort out a few issue that I’ve experienced with mine, I can seem to find any other feeds anywhere so I hope that you don’t mind me sharing them with you.

firstly theirs the constant drop off of my heart rate monitor and speed and cadence sensor, not all at once but independently but for long periods if any at all, even though I’ve reinstalled deleting then reinstalled again, this happens every ride (new batteries fitted)

Stared segments don’t download, they are stared in my Strava account, I’ve owned both the 1000 & 1030 never had a problem before setting them up, so it’s not like I don’t know how too.

it’s a great bit of kit I just expect it to work as it says on the tin.

    Many Regards

    john

  •

What firmware is currently loaded on your 1040 and are you using any Connect IQ fields in your activity profile data page?

What you are reporting was an issue with firmware 12.11 and below, for those who used the Connect IQ fields.  Over the next few days Garmin is pushing out Firmware 12.15 that addresses these issues.

  • Hi Pete, thanks for input, software version is 12.15, only updated today after my commute home, so I don’t know it they have fix my issues, the morning ride in will confirm.

I am using a ConnectIQ field on my screen, but again I won’t know if the software upgrade has fixed my issue until tomorrow.

I have however tried to star a segment to my 1040 but it just keeps telling me Strava download failed.

I’ll update my feed tomorrow, inbound to work at 02:30 Sleeping accommodation

  • I  just blown away.  Battery is amazing. Navigation is rocking it.  I am 465 km done of 1600 and it has not missed a beat.  I turn it off at night and in the morning I turn it on. Select my course from navigation. Say no to navigate to start and we are off.  Not sure if my rally pedals have issues or not.  Liking 1040 so far.

  • Good to hear someone is happy here.  Quite often these forums are a sea of issues and complaints, and it feels like buying these products would be a terrible idea.  I've had a 305, 500, 520, 1000, 1030, vector 3, 2 varias, and a Vivoactive over the last 15-16 years.  Very few problems with any of them, but most of them also had a litany of issues on these forum..  The only return I've ever had to do was the blue halo on the 1030, so it's been a pretty good strike rate TBH.

I'm glad there are some happy customers, so I may take the plunge and get the 1040 solar before a 10 hour ride I have coming up in October.

Are there any other happy customers out there??

  • Are there any other happy customers out there??

Yeah once the initial issues were sorted out, it’s been fantastic. Love it. Get the solar, keep up to date on maps and firmware etc, and you’ll love it.
