In the manual it is written it is possible to do it, I left mine 4 h into the sun and the battery level did not change, it was 94% and I found it at same level after.

I've not seen mine charge when powered off or sleeping. But, also, everytime I check on it to see if it is in deed charging, it's always complaining that it's too hot and won't charge until it cools down.
I tried this as well. I put mine on the patio and it quickly got hot sitting in the sun. Measured 145F on the screen and 124F on the back. So, I called Garmin to ask about the maximum allowed temperature during charging and it turns out it is 113F. Hotter than that and it stops charging to protect the battery. So, if your black 1040 is sitting in bright sun and it is also warm outside than it may not charge because it is too hot.
Let me add that while riding I have no problem with it getting hot while it is in direct sunlight.
No mate it doesn’t. Despite Garmin saying it does.
Same issue here.
Frankly spoken I cannot believe that although Garmin says the unit will charge due to the solar panel, it doesn't do anything except for gaining some minutes during an activity (only)
The idea that the unit would charge, even only a bit, during a coffee or lunch break made me decide to buy this one.
in the manual:
Tips for Using the Edge 1040 Solar Device.
Solar charging is designed to optimize and extend the life of the device's battery. Solar charging occurs even when the device is in sleep mode or
off.
But it looks like it's nothing more than a € 150 added bill with a neoprene sleeve and an extra bike mount as a bonus (which you can buy at € 25 everywhere...)
