1040 (not solar) so far

Got 1040 (not solar version) to upgrade from 830. Transferred profiles, sensors, phone, history, etc. no problem. Di2, Powerlink pedals, Dual HRM, S8 Phone. Not using any Connect IQ stuff.

Have three rides so far. No sensor disconnects (that I'm aware of). Navigated a course using Power Guide (I like this feature) without any problems. LiveTrack, text messages, and calls all work as expected. Stamina page is a useful tool. GPS data looks more accurate when analyzing it on the map.

Editing screens from phone works well.

While navigating it seems a little slow to complete the turn and revert the screen back from the pop-up window.

Bigger fonts (I'm in my mid 50s) would be helpful. Minimum font size would be great!

While saving locations and choosing a symbol, it's impossible to determine what they are. Way too small. Maybe add a descriptive name too.

I'm very happy with the unit so far.

  • Good post.  I just took my first ride with the Edge 1040 (not solar, too), after upgrading from the Edge 530.

Using the same sensors that, when connected to my Edge 530, would drop every 10-20 minutes and sometimes never return, I was pleased to complete this ride with no drops.  I did read of the issue here with the Garmin CIQ fields, so I purposely left them out for now.

Being very leary of sensor dropouts, though, I did not transfer my profiles or sensors from the 530.  Instead, I set up four bikes worth of sensors from scratch.  I didn't want any bugs or remnants from the older unit to carry forward.

I have to admit that I feel the1040 is not fully baked, yet.  Hopefully, Garmin will hopefully continue the mold it with future firmware enhancements.   For example, manually turning on LiveTrack while riding with the 530 took two clicks of the side button.   There does not appear to be as quick a method for turning it on with the 1040 (note that I can't use the auto-on due to no cellphone coverage at the start of the ride).

  • Livetrack doesn't automatically kick in when you hit cell coverage if you have it set to auto?

  • I am basing my experience on the 530.  There was a known issue that if the LiveTrack went live in an area of no coverage, it never started (some type of internal error).   There were a few in the 530 forum who also reported that issue.

After a few times of experiencing this problem, I disabled the auto LiveTrack and instead would always start it manually literally 1/2 mile from my house, where there was coverage.

  • Good to know, thanks.
