Zoom out near course point after self calculated route to a saved location

Yesterday I did a workout and a course, no issues here. When the workout was complete I decided to stop the course itself. A few km's later I decided to navigate to my home location which I stored as a saved location. Following that course, the map screen jumped completely zoomed out near each course point and back again. It kept doing this on each course point. Have not seen this behavior on loaded courses, seems to be related to a device self calculated course.

  • When using the navigating feature there are no course points to show.

Are you maybe describing a point where a turn instruction is being reported? If so it sounds like a feature of the map auto-zoom setting that is zooming in to give you a better view of the turn and then zooms out after you make the turn.

I ride with map auto-zoom turned off, but will try turning this in next time I ride.

  • Indeed, with course points, I meant each turn and direct instruction. It's almost like it's recalculating the course at that point. The same super high-level zoom happens when you let the Garmin reroute or start a route calculation while the map screen is enabled. I'll indeed ride with autozoom turned on.

  • In my case, it happened many times that my 1040 changed scale of the map itself while navigating. And it surely was not autozooming. During normal riding, I have not noticed it yet.

  • As I mentioned I have auto-zoom disabled and as expected I do not get any change in map scale.

It does sound like what you are describing is the auto-zoom feature is changing the scale. This feature is enabled by default.

    Activity Profile -> Profile name -> Navigation -> Map -> Auto-zoom

  • When changing the scale itself, it goes to 200m on scale usually, also when the map is zoomed in more closely. Perhaps auto-zoom is not working correctly.

Next time I will disable it.

  • As I mentioned above I typically ride with auto-zoom disabled as I don't like the map scale changing.

I rode today with auto-zoom enabled while following a course and later using the navigation to a location.

The auto-zoom feature did what I would expect it to do.

It used a zoom level of 300 feet when not near to a turn event. Once I was closer than 0.1 miles from turn event it adjusted the zoom level to 200 feet to give me a closer view of the intersection/turn

  • My issue is definitely not related to autozoom, it zooms out to about 50km or more and back to normal.

  • That sounds like a touch screen issue that another user was seeing where it was registering false touches.

Please reach out to Garmin Customer Support with that issue as I think they will want that unit back for investigation and will replace it for you.

  • It is not touch screen related. No issues following a pre loaded course, no issues without routing, no issues elsewhere, just when navigating using a on device calculated course and only at course turning points.

  • In addition to that, I seen that movie. In my case the zoom level quickly jumps back and does not go endlessly either.
