1040 Virtual Partner

12.11 update release notes (https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1040-series/296696/edge-1040-software-12-11-now-available) say "Virtual Partner Control" have been added. Ive updated to this version but can't find these "Control" anywhere. Anybody found them or any idea what these control can do (e.g. disable Virtual Partner)

Thanks

Ian

  • Thanks. I was hoping for a complete disable but not the end of the world and hopeflly disable will get in at some future time.

  • That I have always wanted (back to Edge 200) is an option to have the VP running at a user settable speed while following a course rather than using the speed (+/- percentage) implied by the track-point time stamps for the course. The implied speed can be a bit random on some planning sites like RwGPS for .FIT & .TCX formats (ie with track-point time stamps)  and for GPX format (no time stamps) I have no idea where the Garmin gets the speed which for me always seems to be 19.31kph?

I do a lot of Audax rides and the course time limit is fixed 0-600kms and less for 600-1000 and again less 1000-1200. If I could adjust the VP speed according to where I was in the course then the "time-ahead" (hopefully ahead) would always tell me how much time I had "in-hand" for eating, sleeping or other

Does the 1040 allow this or is it the same as x30s where the VP speed is in km/h for non-course rides and a percentage for course rides?

    thanks

  • From my testing and usage the behavior of the VP on the 1040 is currently the same as on the 1030+.

I don't know if Garmin has any plans to change this.

I have submitted suggestions to allow more configuration and control of the VP.

  • e.g. disable Virtual Partner

Seems the new Explore 2 does not have the Virtual Partner but shares much of the 1040 features & user interface, maybe time to sell your 1040 and get an Explore 2, if you have trouble shifting the 1040 I might be prepared to help ;-)

  • Use Plotaroute where you can configure the virtual partner speed. You can also configure separate parameters for speed of climbing and descending. (I presume for your Audax rides you'd want to disable this "Adjust for hills" feature.) All that said, since the VP snaps back to your current position whenever you return to a course for any reason, e.g. lost satellites, rest stops, it's currently worthless. It didn't used to be this way, but that was a couple of years ago.

  • Yes, these things make the VP very much less useful. For Audax there are good CIQ data fields for "Time in Hand" which work well giving the same info that the VP would if it worked, good to know how long you can stay off the bike at any point (say for sleeping) and still be ahead of the closing time limit. After 90 hours riding my brain does not work too well so a data field can be a life saver

  • Finally someone that understands the usefulness of the Virtual Partner! Please encourage Garmin to repair it. For example, it worked perfectly on the Edge 830 until they released FW 6.00. I contacted Garmin's Product Support about this issue in September of 2020, answered all their questions, submitted video of the behavior, then heard nothing else.
