1040 avoids ferries at routing.

I live near a ferry station from where a canal can be crossed.
if I search for a location near the ferry station at the other side of the canal and instruct the 1040 to navigate me to that location,
it just refuses to cross the canal by ferry, but instead routes me over bridges resulting in a detour of 10 kms.
All avoidances are disabled.

Usage of OFM (Open Fiets Map) doesn't make a difference, the 1040 just refuses to go by ferry.

  • If you go into the Navigation settings of the Activity Profile you are viewing, there are avoidance settings that can be changed. Please view this link here for information on how to change these. Is the avoidance setting for Ferries currently on?

  • All avoidances, inclusive of the ferry-option,  are off.
Tried a Edge 530, shows exactly the same behaviour.

  • Two thinks to check: is the ferry in the OSM maps as a ferry?

if so, are bikes registered in OSM as allowed?

It reads like OSM isn’t informed on that ferry and the Edge doesn’t know about it because of this.

  • The enabled map is OFM-BNL(11-06-2022). OFM stands for "Open Fiets Map" Fiets - Bicycle.
OpenFietsMap (openfietsmap.nl)  is a free routable cycling map for Garmin GPS units. The map is based on www.openstreetmap.org
This map is not suitable for car / motorbike routing.

I noticed, that if routing mode is set to."pedestrian" (activity proflie>Navigation>Routing mode) the edge will route over the ferry, however if routing mode is set to
"Road cycling" the edge just refuses to go over the ferry.
This happens with tthe OFM map enabled and also if the Garmin Cycle Map EU 2021.20 West is enabled.

  • It sounds like the "permissions" for that particular ferry either do not designate bicycles or specifically prohibit them. I've had this issue a few times last summer on my 1030 when trying to use the ferries to cross the Scheldt near Antwerp. I went into OSM and "fixed" the permissions to allow bicycles, and now it works fine. Would you mind telling us which ferry it is, I'd be happy to take a look and correct this if it is incorrect.

  • It's the ferry between Velsen Zuid and Velsen Noord crossing the Noordzeekanaal in the Netherlands.
    Canal connects Amsterdam with sea.

  • I just looked at it, and it is very clearly permitted for cyclists...not only for the ferry, but also on the connecting roads on both sides.
