1040 course reroute. Does it work?

I have the Edge 830 and the reroute option when going off course whilst navigating has always been pants. It just tried to reroute you back to the point you left the set course as opposed to finding you the fastest way back on up ahead.

I hear Garmin improved this on the 1030 plus but I've never seen evidence of this. As a future potential buyer of the 1040 then I want to know does the reroute function work properly?

Here is my scenario...I'm navigating along a route which is on device and  for example I miss left a turn carrying on ahead a few hundred yards. The device warns me and asks to recalculate. If I accept does it recalculate getting me back on the route nearer my destination as opposed to rerouting me back to where I missed the turn?

What would really be helpful would be if someone could post a short video clip of how it's rerouting works.

Thanks.

Peter

  • While I do not have a video clip, reroute seems to be faster and snappier than before (which is good). Also the suer interface is better (also good)
Yet, most reroute suggestion I get is "do a U-turn".
I assume that this might be due to the fact that many of my courses use multiple course points (to force navigation to go along good bike pathes instead of doing random "shortest routes" through redlights and whatnot - i typically have a route point every 2 km, more in dense urban areas less in open fields). Garmin reroute seems to hate missing any course point, so it seems to always want's to bring you to the next course point you have not yet been to which in most cases means doing a U-turn.

I underestand why this might be a good idea, but at least for me that is not the functionality I need for rerouting. (for example: my last course had somewhat optional loop/detour near to the end of the course, something I would do if I had extra time / motivation. This detour would add 10km, and return to the main route home rather close to where it started. I decided to skip that detour, and went home directly. Around 500m from my house door (end of course), even rerouting there, it would not bring me home, but still insisted to go back 5km to catch the first course point on the detour.)

  • To be honest , something is not working as it should with 1040 navigation or routing , or I did not have right options.

Usually I load an course and follow it ,  but if we need to shot the course, usually I stop the current course then hit "back to start" button following the shortest distance , on Monday after using "back to start "  device was prompting for the recalculation , over and over again, so what it must calculate , as I did not changed directions

Also I did not had 1030 + , but stop course button is missing , only pause , to stop current course , instead of X present on the screen , you have to go on the dropdown menu , then find the window for course

  • Anyone else want to weigh in on this, does navigation reroute work properly for you?

  • I switched from 1030 to 1040 Solar and ran my first ride with 1040 navigation this weekend
When I left the route after a few seconds I was asked to  select one of the 3 possible reroute selections
The "return to course (I'm using German as language so the wording might be slightly different!) was preselected and I had to hot a big "Go" button on the lower part of the display. Then the new route was shown within a moment (< 1 sec).

I do not have yet sufficient time with my 1040 to say if everything works flawless but it works a lot lot better than the "do a U-turn" (which was one cause to swith to 1040).

P.S. I would like to configure an ("auto reroute to course") but pressing the "Go" button is no big issue.

  • I have been experimenting with the reroute option.  However, in my case and coming from an Edge 530, I prefer the unit to just refrain from constantly nagging me that I went off-route as the 530 did.

In this regard, the 1040 offers more flexibility than the 530 for straying from the course.  My current setting is to prompt me for options, and the one that works well is to "SUSPEND NAVIGATION," which quiets the unit until you get back on course.  This option is obviously for cyclists who know their routes and prefer temporary detours.

I haven't yet chose the reroute and followed that new route, but that will be part of my test.

  • I think there are few options for course recalculation in the Navigation Menu, I did not tried either as did not had time to test

  • What kind of routes do you use? Do you plan the routes on your Garmin device or is it a route from Komoot?

  • I plan my routes always on my Windows PC and transfer most of the time via USB cable.
Sometimes (when I forget to download) I load the komoot routes directly from my Garmin device (I haven't try this yet on the 1040).

  • Just finished a 1600 km ride. Re route came up one time offering me 2 choices to reroute. Worked great.  One other time it got messed up a bit but it ended up working.  No uturns on the trip at all.

  • Can you elaborate a little bit?

You had the route created before? Splited by days?

And one day you missed the course and garmin offers to reroute?

What settings did you have in navigation menu?
