Solar charging temporarily disabled

I've used the new 1040 Solar only once so far without issue. Setup and migration worked really well (other than CIQ apps/data fields not migrating due to not being updated to include the 1040 as compatible).

Tonight I turned it on to load a course for tomorrow. When putting it to sleep I noticed the message, "Solar charging temporarily disabled. after the Edge cools down, solar charging will resume." The device had been sitting inside unused today and was not hot, or even warm. I power cycled it but no luck. It was previously charged to 99% so maybe solar charging is disabled if not needed? Either way, the message on screen is odd.

Anyone else seen this?

  • I've not seen it, but solar charging will get disable if the battery temperature goes above a certain level. What software build were you on when this happened.

  • I used my 1040 solar for all of 90 seconds before all the sensors dropped, all of them, and I pulled over to see what was going on, and it gave me this same solar charging is paused message.

The 1040 is back in a drawer until things are sorted out somewhat.

I was expecting bugs for sure, I have been using garmin edge bike computers since the 705, but losing all sensors is too much.

  • On software version 12.11

Solar charging worked fine when riding today, so I suspect it was due to it being nearly fully charged, but the messaging could be improved.

  • I've been using Garmin devices since the 305, the 1040 is just terrible, it is unacceptable to have it completely fail minutes into a ride.

  • I think you also get that message when it does not register any sun (eg indoor and not near a window).

  • I agree.  I charged mine with the cable to full charge a couple of days ago and I had this message on the screen when I unplugged it.  I did a ride yesterday afternoon that it recorded a temp of 100F and solar charging worked the whole ride.  I'd guess that the battery does get hotter while plugged in which is probably triggering the message, but in this case the message should be "Solar charging disabled while charging with USB" or something like that.

  • Thanks for confirming the same thing I was seeing. Initially it had me concerned there was an issue, but more seems like it's a messaging issue.

  • I cannot get it to charge in the sun, indoor or outdoor. Except when out on a ride.
It gets too hot when in the sun, seems to need the wind chill.

This is when powered on, off and in sleep. No charging cord attached.

  • Mine doesn't use solar charge anymore at all. Not during a ride or powered off. I'm on the latest firmware 12.15

  • I had the exact same issue after leaving it plugged into my computer. Also not warm at all but still got the Solar charging disabled until cooled down message. On rides with full sunlight and 4 hours long I'm getting about 8 minutes back from solar. The battery level went from 100% at start of ride down to about 62%. I have contacted Garmin and they were great. I'm leaning towards the battery is bad in my unit. Using software version 12.15.
