Anyone who has received their new 1040 able to confirm whether the soft silicone case is included in the box? It is listed as included with the Solar, but not mentioned on the standard. Thanks

its included with the solar. Its not included with the non solar. Confirmed (by me )
1040 Solar also comes with an additional MTB mount in the box. That plus the silicone case amounts to about $100CAD (with tax) of added accessories, narrowing the gap between 1040 solar and non-solar from…
I'm with you. I wanted the solar because, well why not. In reality in the UK where I ride mostly evenings and one daytime ride at the weekend, it would be pretty pointless. There was no stock of the solar…
As far as I know, Garmin never includes cases with their Edge products.

Ah ok, gotcha. You know, in addition to the fatter onboard storage and the inclusion of a case, I have to wonder if they maybe should have beefed up the solar variation a little more. I don't need solar, because 100 hours is literally 4 or 5 times more than I would ever need, since I carry a portable charger for my cell phone, and even on a full day ride or 100+ miles, I have to come home some time. I would literally never benefit by having this many hours. I would actually be fine with the 1030 battery, but since I skipped that gen anyway, and need to upgrade my Edge 1000, I will buy the standard version of the 1040. I really can't wait to get this!
To me, for probably 99% of all cyclists who would buy an Edge, solar power has no functional value beyond bragging rights. Which, don't get me wrong, all us tech'ish people make bragging rights purchases at one time or another. I am a gamer, and I always buy much better desktops and laptops than I really need, in part just for the cool factor. I mean, say what you want about the solar power being nothing but a gimmick in a device already delivering 100 hours, and in an age where most cyclists with riding devices probably carry power banks in their various bags; but, the solar power does have a cool factor you can't deny. So if the solar 1040 makes even most people who don't actually need happy, just by virtue of that feeling of "Wow check this *** out!! then I say go for it.

From the "In the box" section:
I'm with you. I wanted the solar because, well why not. In reality in the UK where I ride mostly evenings and one daytime ride at the weekend, it would be pretty pointless. There was no stock of the solar so I went standard. The battery is showing 35 hours for me. I did a 2 hour ride last night and used 4% battery. That's with speed, heart, lights, radar, di2, power sensors, backlight on and multiband gps. I'd have liked the silicone case though, but that's not worth 120 quid extra

I take these battery claims by Garmin with a grain of salt. Always have, since the Edge 1000 claimed 15 hours. For the record, no matter what conveniences I turned off, I was never able to get more than about 10 or 11 hours. Now I just turn everything on and live with what is still a highly respectable 8'ish hours, a lot less at night, because on night rides I always set the back-light to never shut off. But it was never really an issue, since I always travel with power-banks on rides, just in case.
I will be getting an Edge 1040 in the coming weeks, but I could honestly not care any less if the 100 hour battery claim is complete BS, and I "only" get 35 hours.
I wanted the solar because, well why not.
The why not for me is that the Solar screen is apparently less bright than the non-Solar screen. I don't need the extra battery life, but I certainly don't want a dimmer screen.
The included silicone case sucks. For some strange reason Garmin didn't think you needed a way to connect the lanyard and have the case on at the same time. There is no cut out for the lanyard to go through.
I ended up getting a cheap one from Amazon.
Second this. The included case is poor. I bought a Tusita from Amazon and it is a much better fit with the lanyard.
