Cadence 2 Sensor not calculating speed or distance

I have installed my Cadence 2 to my crank, got it to blink 5 times and synced it to my phone and watch (Garmin Proactiv). I use the indoor bike setting. I also went into the "sensor" setting on the watch and see that there are 2 garmin cadence sensors not connected. I have to manually connect them both every time on the watch every time I begin a ride. When the watch tells me to press the start button, I can see the garmin icon flashing and then I assume it is connected and speaking to my watch. However, my watch never calculates distance.

Anyone familiar with this type of error?

Cadence sensor provides cadence only, and does not provide speed nor distance.

So i am just recording rhythm? Did I make the foolish mistake of buying the Cadence without the speed sensor? My research made it seem as if I only had to buy the one item. Do I need both? Can I just use the speed sensor? Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes.

If you want BOTH cadence and speed, then yes.

Yes. A speed sensor will work without a cadence sensor, however it will give you only speed and no cadence.

Thank you very much for helping me. I will get the speed sensor now. But my big question is, what is cadence? Is the device recording rhythm?

Yes, that's correct. Cadence is the number of crank revolutions per minute, and a compatible garmin device can record it. Some cyclists find this data useful.

Just a side note:
You mentioned „Indoor“.
If you‘re riding a trainer in your home, a speedsensor only can be used if you ride a „real bicycle“ with a rear wheel.

On the other hand - most modern trainers are "smart" and transmit speed via ANT+ (or BT).

So, what's my best option on an indoor trainer via the Garmin products? I watched a video of a guy riding a stationary bike and he applied both the speed sensor and cadence to the bike. Should I just give up and continue to let my watch just read my heartbeat? Thank you.

The trainer is the device you put your bike on or are you using an exercise bike with no back wheel?

Many newer trainers can transmit the data you need directly to your Garmin device with no need for extra sensors. Some exercise bikes can do that as well, but I guess you will need a more expensive one for that.
