Garmin HR strap troubleshooting

Got this Edge 1030 second hand just couple weeks ago, this HR strap was included (looks like never been used).

I had my old ANT+ speed/cadence sensors and connected without issues, also the Varia UT800 is working as well.

For Zwift only I had to order a new speed/cadence BLE set (for tablet use), got the kit today. Removed the old sensors paired the new sensors straight forward, tried to pair the HR strap and the EDGE 1030 just rolling the search.

What or how to troubleshoot the HR strap? I checked the battery is OK and overall looks like new. Cannot call back to seller the deal was weeks ago and don't want to bother them with this.

I can't justify a new strap purchase without proving myself this strap cannot work.

  • Could be as simple as flat battery however are there any Heart Rate sensors already paired? If the Edge came with the HRM it might already be paired & you'll get theresponse you are sering when you try to pair it again when it's already paired.

Also you need to wear the HRM during the pairing process for the Edge to detect it

  • This was a second hand purchase, when I received the Edge I did a factory reset,I bought a dozen batteries from amazon (for all my sensors) and inspected when replaced.

I did not check with Garmin Express the log files if anything remained from a previous owner after the reset. I have no idea how would I do that I would need to dig out that process where to look for any traces if this strap was paired earlier.

The strap looks very new (and basic, probably from the original bundle) I could assume the previous person put it aside and got an upgrade strap for hes/her use.

I weared the strap when I tried to pair it to Edge.

  • Just get a wahoo Tickr and be done. It's a much better strap in all ways.

  • Older Garmin HR straps sometimes need the battery terminals shorted (eg with a paper clip) when changing the battery. I didn’t think this applied to the 1030 version but worth a try

  • I weared the strap when I tried to pair it to Edge.

I don't know where you live, but at this time of year the air can be very dry, and this can severly impair HR strap performance, to a point where it does not wake up even if you wear it. No trying to convince you that this is indeed the problem, but try applying some moisture to the electrodes before putting it on.

  • Yes and no. I have the TICKRX for when I swift and the HRM-Tri when I do everything else so I can get the run dynamics with my fenix 6 and for it to save HR data when I swim.

I would look on Amazon and eBay. You can get the TICKRX relatively cheap now a day. that is why I have both.

  • In Canada both the TICKRX and Garmin HR dual about the same price. Any of this noticeable better then the other?I would buy for Zwifting (to start with) over winter only, my summer rides with VA3 were OK.

I am ready to order only have a concern for TICKRX....my background in engineering is telling me that is always a best to stay within a single platform...biking related - I have everything Garmin and all syncing to a single app (same as all in my house is google Home).

Some people may like many many different apps...one for this and one for that...too much toying around. This my perspective.

  • Shortening terminals before taking out the battery or after taking out the battery?

  • Definitely with the battery removed short the terminals of the HR module. Never short the terminals of a battery, especially lithium.

  • thanks for the tip but no luck, tomorrow leaving from work earlier may re=route to MEC (exactly that location is the smallest from all their stores in Greater Toronto), buying one strap.
