After edge 1030 4.0 update heart rate stops updating after 6 to 50 minutes

After doing the update, I have had my heart rate information stop updating. It hangs at some point on my ride and holds whatever heart rate I had at the moment it stops updating for the remainder of the ride. This is skewing all of my reports. It’s been hanging anywhere from 6 minutes into the ride to maybe 50 minutes.

I have several Polar H7 units. I’ve been using them without a glitch for months. I’ve tried changing the batteries, I’ve tried various H7 units. Every ride it stops updating. I connect via Bluetooth. I’ve had both indoor and one outdoor ride. On the outdoor ride, my husband noticed that I lost my Bluetooth connection to my phone, or I must have as the live track stopped updating. He had wanted to track that ride since I would be gone several hours riding on roads with fast moving cars until dusk. He said the Garmin track only showed me at the very beginning of my ride, not even 10 minutes, then picked up sometime during the last hour when he could see me again. But my heart rate data never appeared again.

I’m going to try my husband’s wahoo ticker on tomorrow’s ride. I’ll connect via ant that way. But I really would prefer to get back to my Bluetooth heart rate monitor. I’ve used those with my Edge 1030 since I bought the edge months ago just fine, until this week.

Any thoughts on what I might try? Anyone else having this issue? I searched the forums, but couldn’t find any Bluetooth heart rate hanging issues.

eta 4.0 update to title
  • Clearly BLE related issues. I switched from Polar OH1 to my old Tickr HRM, made sure it's connecting by ANT+, and had zero problems during the ride.

same problem here, looking forward for a solution.....
  • Yep, while both Polar H7 and H10 show the same issue (both BTLE connections only), it doesn't happen with the ANT+ Garmin HRM. So it appears it is linked to a BTLE connection issue introduced with 4.0.
  • Thx for the heads up. I can confirm for the Tickr that if you connect through ANT+ the device stays connected! Hurraah! Connect it with Bluetooth it drops connection, both confirmed for my phone and Wahoo Tickr!

    Garmin,

Please fix your Bluetooth connection errors and a lot of people will start stop complaining.

Livetrack doesn't work (drops connection after some time, won't upload, freezes when syncing) all because the BT connection is NOT STABLE!!
  • I am having a similar issue where HR and Cadence are dropped after around 5 to 60 minutes of riding. I'm connecting via ANT+. BT and Wifi are shut off. I confirmed it wasn't my sensors by doing a few rides while simultaneously paired with my Forerunner 920XT. No drop outs on the Forerunner. I have an open ticket with Garmin. I sent them the contents of my Edge 1030 files to analyze. They tell me they are working on this. I guess we just need to be patient.
  • Interestingly I don't notice any issue with the PowerPod, which is connecting also through Bluetooth...

Okay, we are about one week further since my previous post and I haven't seen any information concerning the ticket that Shawn promised to open. I may hope it's still open.
Last Saturday, I did an interval training, my HR blocked again and as a result I got my best interval training ever: Avg HR 121 bpm / Max Hr 133 bpm:D:D:D. That's great for a training where I push my HR to my limits, isn't it?

No, serious: I did some testing and according to me it indeed seems to be a Bluetooth problem. Here is my story:
    - since the 4.0 firmware, I did 4 trainings and during all 4, my edge 1030 stopped recording my HR.
    - I use a Geonaute Dual HR belt (this belt uses 2 protocols: Ant+ and Bluetooth). That allows me to register my trainings with my Edge and with my Polar simultaneously.
    - I didn't realise that with my new Edge 1030 this belt had connected to the Edge using Bluetooth. On my previous devices this wasn't possible, being the reason why I bought the Dual HR (using Ant+ for my Edge and Bluetooth for my Polar).
    - So today I reconnected my belt to the Edge using Ant+.
    - No problems any longer!! HR was registered correctly.

Conclusion: same Edge device, same firmware, same HR belt, different communication protocol. So, it seems to be the Bluetooth connectivity that causes the problem, no?
However, I read that some of you seem to have Ant+ problems as well. I will continue using the Ant+ connection on my next trainings and keep you posted if I experience HR problems again.

FYI: during my ride today, my Bluetooth was active also (connecting my Edge to my smartphone) but this didn’t seem to interfere my (Ant+) HR registration.

Hope to read some update on the issue with this firmware.

I have had exactly the same issues since updating the firmware to V 4.0. I have a Scosche Rhythm + which works fine when connected to zwift, yet freezes every time I connect it to Garmin. I tried my wife's Scosche today thinking there may be some sort of problem with mine but the same thing happened. I also have the issue where livetrack drops out shortly after the ride has started.
  • I have freeze issues with Scosche Rhythm + as well...

Has the issue been resolved? I am still experiencing issues with my HR10 polar not updating and freezing. How do I disable Bluetooth on my Garmin 1030 ? I believe that the polar hr10 will ONLY connect via Bluetooth and not ANT+. What am I missing to solve this issue?
