Brand new 1030 Edge loses bluetooth connection to my android phone.

Hello all,

I did some searches on the bluetooth issue many of us have.

I just recieved my brand new Edge 1030 today by mail and started off with good intentions on setting things up.

I'm now 7 hours into it trying to find a solution for the following problem.

My Lenovo P2 Android 7.0 phone finds the Edge 1030 with no problems. In Garmin Connect the Edge is connected for about 5 seconds, than I get a message 'Phone not connected', 5 seconds later 'Phone Connected', again 'Phone not Connected', and so on and so on.

Is there a simple quick fix to have my phone forced to stay connected to the Edge so I can use the strava segments and the beacon so if something happens my family know where I am.

Kind regards.

  • Hi,

I followed the instructions in one of the posts of this thread https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/cycling/edge-1030-aa/1419355-bluetooth-pairing-issue
and since then haven’t experienced any drop outs on my s10 ( Android)

    Good luck
  • I figured I may as well copy the instruction over on this thread :)

Gamin Support sent me an email below:
Credit when its due they have released an update on GCM which when I followed their instructions has resolved the connection issue.
I now have a device where all the functionality can be utilised.
    Thank-you Garmin.

We have recently released software version 4.13.3 for Garmin Connect Mobile and we hope this update resolves the issue.

If you haven't done so please check the app store and install any updates for Garmin Connect Mobile.

Once the app is up to date please try and pair the Edge.

If you find it is still failing out, your phone might be holding onto the Bluetooth information from previous attempts, to clear
that out follow the steps below:
    • Open GCM>More>"Garmin Devices"
    • If there is reference to the Edge, select and "Remove Device"
    • Open iOS BT settings
    • Forget any reference to paired Edge devices (e.g. BT_Edge_1030)
    • (Optional) Remove any unknown or unused Bluetooth devices
    • Toggle BT off
    • Log out and close the GCM app
    • Power the phone off
    • On the Edge, open Menu>Connected Features>Phone
    • If a phone is listed under "Smartphone", Select and "Forget Phone">Select check mark
    • Toggle "Enable" to off
    • Power off Edge
    • Power on phone
    • Toggle BT back on
    • Open GCM>More>Garmin Devices>Add Device>Select Edge from device search list
    • Power on Edge
    • Open Menu>Connected Features>Phone>Toggle Enable back on
    • Select "Pair Smart Phone">Select "Continue"
    • Select "Start" in GCM
    • Select BT_Edge_1030 from BT list
    • On Edge, select "OK" on pairing request
    • In GCM Select "Pair" on pairing request
    • Select Edge 1030 from device list in GCM
    • Select "Pair" when prompted
    • Continue with set up in GCM

Did this twice and still have this issues with the Samsung S8 and the Edge 1030.
My wife has the IPhone7 and does not have any issues.
Looks to me not to be a bluetooth issue, but something in connection to Android.

LiveTrack only seems to work when my wife is cycling next to me and not working when I ride on my own (when I would use it.....) :(.
  • I have a Samsung S7e and the approach I use is that I delete the Connect app from my phone, remove the phone from my 1030 and then reinstall everything from scratch. I have to do this each time the 1030 is updated and sometimes when the Connect app is updated. If I do the clean install my connection seems to work well with no issues.

I'm so tired of this. The Edge 1000 had its quirks with constant reboots that eventually got fixed before the power buttons all started breaking. I thought the 1030 was better, but that's only because until now I left my phone disconnected when the remote control couldn't function during phone pairing. (recently fixed) Now that I ride with a phone paired, it's horrible. Google Pixel 1, and 2, same issue. Every 3 days or so I have to go through the whole thing of uninstalling the mobile connect app, go through the pairing process a minimum 5 times before it stops failing to pair (yes I do the long detailed process of using the mobile app, not system settings).
It just doesn't matter. Every few days it fails to pair until I start the process over. Today the Edge somehow even forgot the pairing on it's own and had no phone in the menu. It took me 15 minutes of rebooting the Edge and phone and going back through the pairing process to get it to work.
When it is paired, it's constant disconnect, reconnect during the ride. Today for the first time I got text messages while the phone was paired and magically stayed connected for 10 minutes at a time., and it shut the Edge down mid-ride when I got SMS messages. Every. Single. Time. This is a few days after doing a full reset on the Edge to try and correct any pairing issues. It also uploads the ride about half the time, the rest of them I just upload while I charge from the PC. Half the time Connect mobile says it's paired to the Edge but the Edge says it's not connected. I know some people have better luck, but I know I'm not the minority here.
This year I've invested in a ton in Vaira hardware (vision, radar). Alas, I'm selling my 1030. It's just not worth the headaches anymore.
I'm going to try my brother's (pre-ordered) 830 and (IF) it somehow doesn't follow the pattern of bad releases I'll pick one up.
It pains me to say it, but at this point I'm just hoping it's a common hardware chip issue in the 1030 that doesn't exist in the new models (rather than bad software).
The only other possibility is that Android Bluetooth technology in general is just that bad, but I've never had issues staying connected to headsets, keyboards, or less complex hardware.
Edit: I do keep the mobile app in the forefront running and lock the phone during my rides

No issue for my Edge 1030 APAC 7.0 with S9+ running Android 9.0.
  • Interesting... Same problem here. I had Samsung S9 until a week ago - the bluetooth droputs were constant. Did all the advised dances around install/uninstall - nothing. Then last week I changed my phone from S9 to Galaxy Note9 - so completely different phone. Set up everything from scratch and.... Same dropouts! Honestly I don't know where to look. Either it is on my Edge 1030 or something with Android in general given the previous posts and different phones listed. Shawn-Garmin - any advice?
My main use case for the bluetooth is LiveTrack so that the family can be relaxed on my long rides.
And please don't get me wrong - I love my 1030, wouldn't change it for any other make/model - it is brilliant!
    Edge 1030: v.7.30
    GC: 4.18
  • Connection with my Galaxy S9 has always been inconsistent. It may disconnect once or several times during a ride, regardless of version of GCM. One of the many failures with this device.

The same for me with S9+. Samsung is not a good brand, too
  • I would recommend reaching out to Garmin Product Support.

  • Telephone removed from the Edge, Edge removed from phone, Connect uninstalled and reinstalled. The phone finds and syncs with the Edge and everything goes well. But at the next ride, the Edge can not find the phone, the phone sees the Edge but no connection. (Last Android version, problem since the firmware 7 of the Edge)
