Vo2Max

Hi I have a Wahoo kickr snap paired to my HRM pro and edge 1030. On indoor rides I had previously gotten HR, Power, average HR, average power, and an estimate of VO2Max. On my last 3 rides I do not get VO2Max. It reports VO2Max from last week. I am riding long enough at high enough HR that according to the documentation I should get a VO2Max estimate. And I am doing nothing different from what I was doing a week ago.

I recently updated the 1030, and I have it set for indoor. During the ride, power and HR are visible in real time on the display. It appears that the ride is saved normally at the end. On Garmin connect, I can see all expected metrics except VO2Max is reported "As of" last week.

  • because your vo2max didnt change (it is stable now). did you get performance condition +/- value at the beginning of the workout? you can check it on GC also. if your perf. is always in plus zone (lets say +5 at the beginning and +1/+2 at the end) during the ride than there is a high chance that you will get a new vo2max value after saving the ride. otherwise not. (and the last shown value is valid in GC, it is similar as with predicted FTP)

  • Thanks for the reply. On my most recent ride, performance condition was negative throughout. On the ride before that, my all-time high as far as power, it was +6 at the start, +8 to +9 intermediate, and +6 at the end. As i said I am doing nothing different from what I did before when I would get a VO2Max value for every ride on the Wahoo stationary trainer-power meter. i do not have a means of gettint power on outdoor rides at present.

  • so: if your vo2max reached your base, then after this point it is not changing after every workout, if you have good day and has +5 PCond and after the next one also similar, then it will increase, similar to the decreasing the Edge is waiting for an another activity to decide what to do (increase, decrease or leave it on the base). in your case it is leaving on the base. if you reached plateu, then this number wont increase any more. it is not an odometer that always increasing...

so that your VO2Max (or FTP or LTHR) is not moving for days/weeks, it is totally normal and good operation.

  • I previously got a value on all my indoor rides paired to the power meter, whether VO2 was increasing, decreasing, or flat. So not getting an update is new app behavior. And i would be surprised if it is flat since the ride before last was my all-time power PR

  • the VO2Max and the Power PRs (or CPs) are not moving together, it is a fact, if you are going to a lab and measuring your VO2Max, that a fix value, a value of your body and you cant increase it, that is the plateu.

Honestly my Edge 840 is not giving VO2Max values after the rides ( and i am riding everyday, with powermeter and HR ofc), just Training Effect (Base , Tempo, etc). There was no new firmware for 1030plus since 2 years.

" new app behavior" what kind of app?

but here is a test: go allin for 6mins , and measure your bodyweight and do this math:

    the (6minavgpower x 10.8 ) / bodyweight in kg. and after this number , add +7. and this is your vo2max. lets say 400watt avg for 6mins, 68kg, then: 400*10.8/68  + 7 = 70.5 VO2Max. Everything else is just a guessing, as the Garmin's prediction too

  • ahh, and i forgot: the Snap is a power estimator (from the worse type...) , that is not a power meter . What that is "measuring" as power that is far from reality (and in this case, the VO2Max calculation is not valid)
