My routes have false turns. How do I eliminate them?

I’m experiencing bad turn info on downloaded routes. At various intersections which should have been ridden straight through, the map indicated a left hand turn across traffic then a right hand turn going straight against traffic on the same road. How do you correct these false prompts?

  • A common cause of this is due to the route being planned with the planning map zoomed out (to speed up the plotting) and an intended straight ahead point actually being plotted in the side street and therefore unintended turns, u-turns etc. The cure is to do the plotting with a more zoomed in map, Garmin Connect Route Planner is a problem as it does not zoom in enough when the density of streets is high. Another possible cause is using a non-OSM based map to do the planning (eg google map or google satellite view) , and the created route may differ slightly from the on device internal map.

  • Another possibility is that it’s due to the way the course creator is setting out the routes. Placing control points right in an intersection can generate strange results and it is much better to place them either side of it and let the course planning tool determine the route through the turn.
