Ride time inaccuracies

I did my 2nd ride with edge 1030 plus today. The ride duration is very different than my bike computer. It is about 39 mins longer which seems very close to my lunch break. At lunch when I attempted to put Garmin in sleep mode, it asked me to turn the timer off, which I did. Not sure if this caused the issue. But see below the listed data as there is another puzzling issue

A note though that the mileage (62.25 miles) is essentially same as my bike computer.

Bike computer time is 4:32 and avg speed 14.9 MPH

Garmin time is 5:11 and the avg speed 13.16 MPH

What is even stranger, Garmin sent Strava yet a different time.

Strava shows time as 5:49 and speed is 11.7 MPH. Interestingly, the difference is 38 mins. Very close to the diff between my bike computer and Garmin.

I hope someone has a clue what might be happening?

  • There are three time metrics used in Garmin Connect, namely Elapsed Time, Time and Moving Time.

Elapsed Time = time from pressing start to pressing stop to end the activity and includes non-moving time.

Time = time that the device is not paused. ie the timer is running.

Moving Time = time that movement is detected.

If there are no pauses, Time = Elapsed Time.

If there are pauses, Time = Moving Time apart from pause triggering lags.

The Average Speed data field uses Time, not Elapsed Time.

Other platforms may interpret the data differently but it’s all coming from the same activity file.

  • PeterK,

Thanks for the explanation of variables.

After speaking with couple of users I have made some changes in setup.

I changed timer start mode to auto 6 mph

I enabled auto pause 3 mph

I changed cadence to “do not include zeros”

Let’s see if this will fix my issue but I still do not know why Strava does not match Garmin.
