To be notified before a change of direction

I came from another GSP and I really liked the beep notification before the intersection change.
When I was approaching a turn in an intersection, I would get a beep a few feet ahead. It is extremely relaxing, I find, to be notified before a turn.

On the other hand, it's extremely frustrating to have to constantly look at your GPS when you do long rides of 300km and more, and extremely irritating to have a beep 100-200m later.

Is there such a notification option on the Garmin?

  • Have you got Turn Guidance turned on? If it’s off you will only be getting the course point information embedded in your course file, which may well pop up after the point location (unless you have a notify before turn option in your course creator) due to mapping/GPS error and processing lag.

If TG is on you should be getting advance warning of turns.

  • Where is this option?

  • On a 530 it's under Menu>Navigation>Courses>Course Options. Should be something similar on a 1030+

  • Thanks for the info. It was well hidden this setting I think!

  • No worries. Perhaps check that Off Course Warnings are on too. (in the same Courses area)

  • If you are new to Garmin (1030) then the VeloGPS videos are a very good starting point for informing you of various navigation options available

    especially https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z148dVwYr5A for  Navigation.

If you have Turn Guidance enabled you will see the big white arrows on the Map screen but another 2 options to pay attention to are,

Menu>Activity Profiles>[Profile Name]>Navigation>Navigation Prompts> (either "Map" or "Text"), these determine the type of prompt you get especially when NOT on the Map Screen

Menu>Activity Profiles>[Profile Name]>Navigation>Map>Guide Text>(3 options determine if you see the next turn directions on the top line of the Map)

Good Luck, the VeloGPS navigation Video should make it clearer, hopefully.

Garmins have a bit of a learning curve

ps: if you have a loaded route / course with course points especially if these are routing site generated turn cues then it can get confusing as you will get two notifications for each turn. You can turn the course point notifications off Menu>Navigation>Courses]>[Course Name]>Settings>Course Points Disable
