I'm done with Garmin Cycling Computers

Just a sampling of the problems I've had with unit since new ( and with 2 previous Edge units ):

- Turns off, won't turn on.

- Reboots in middle of ride

- Never connects to satellites, never navigates for a 3-hour, 48-mile ride

- Start Ride, Navigate to Start - it senses end of route, finishes ride just 100 yards in, stops navigation.  Are you kidding me?

- Drops sensors often: power meter, heart rate monitor, etc. despite full battery charge

- Loses route mid-ride

- Tells me to U-turn when I'm on route, riding correct direction

- Drops phone connection often, won't upload ride via bluetooth

- Refuses to load route, regardless of download method.  Turns out it has a hard limit of 100 routes, despite having plenty of memory.  Won't even tell you that's the reason why route won't load.

- Freezes up, won't respond in middle of ride

Garmin Edge 1000 / 1030 Plus = $600 unreliable POS.  Never know from one ride to next if it will actually work.  I've finally had it.  Purchased a new Wahoo Element Roam 2, tossing out my Edge 1030 Plus.  Posted this with six bike clubs so others can avoid this never-ending frustration.

It seems you are close to the start. You only need "navigate to start" if you are some real distance to the start. So, you have to load the route when you get to the start. Not a big deal.

This is a bit annoying but the devices aren't meant to be endless store for your courses or activities.

Most of the other stuff isn't common at all.

  • Pretty simple: download the route, follow route from beginning to end, upload the ride.  As basic a use case scenario for a bike computer as you can get.  But yeah, you're right - too much to expect from Garmin.  "Not a big deal", "Not common at all" - pretty much encapsulates the Garmin attitude - which is why I'm done with Garmin.
