Garbage max speed indications

Recently - like over the past couple of months, since installing the 6.40 FW on my 1030+, I have several times noticed that the built-in max speed field on the 1030+ is showing a value that is much too high. I'm only using GPS, no speed sensor on the bike. For example, after an easy 20km flat ride this morning to the meeting point for our training group, where my speed wouldn't have exceeded 35kph at any point, the max speed field was showing 66kph. And a few days ago, where I might have hit 50kph down a couple of small hills, the max speed was showing 89kph.

I can never remember seeing this large discrepancy previously on the 1030+, and I can't recall ever seeing it at all on either the 1000 or 1030 that I previously used.

  • Hi! Do you have screenshots of this? Do you recall if you had all 5 GPS bars acquired before starting the Edge timer?

  • No, I don't have a screenshot as I use the power button for locking the screen after starting an activity. I didn't notice the number of GPS bars before starting the activity, but the unit had been powered up for a couple of minutes before I started the activity, and it started counting distance as soon as I started moving.

  • p.s. I just had a look at the activity on Garmin Connect (https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/9465306779). If you expand out the speed graph, you can clearly see the very brief false peak up to 66kph at the 9km mark:

  • I have the opposite issue after receiving a replacement Garmin 1030+ unit & changing the battery on the SpeedSensor 2

Will be chugging along at 15-20mph house & the unit will suddenly show 6.0mph & auto pause.

I have already sent all my logs to Maeve & Eric & this is still an issue & now i'm no longer sure what is causing this

  • I see your activity link, I do not see anything else out of the ordinary, has this ever occurred in another ride?

  • Happens all the time on every single ride, even after you guys replaced the 1030+.

I will be riding along at 15mph on the dedicated bike path & the unit speed will drop to 6.0mph & it will pause & then start. This happens at certain points on the path & even though I am under an open sky

If you look at the emails I sent on my earlier open ticket with all the graphs you will see dips in the speed where, the speed just drops to 6mph or lower, which would be physically impossible looking at the elevation & terrain plot

ie. You can't go from 15mph to near zero in 2 secs & back up to 15mph.

I'm not sure if the unit also takes into account gps when doing its speed calculation or just the speed sensor & if its losing gps signal at certain points on the bike path.

This issue is more frequent on the current firmware 6.40 on the old unit & the new replacement & you now also have the ant+ debug logs from the old unit.

I think this is very likely a firmware issue, than a hardware one.

  • 1) have you mounted the speedsensor on front or rear wheel?

    2) are you sure speed comes from sensor (and not from GPS)? When standing still, turn the wheel and check if there is a speed displayed.

  • Rear wheel on both bikes.

Spinning the wheel when the bike is on a stand will show speed & the 1030+ shows the sensor is connected as I have to manually hit connect for heartmonitor/speed/power/shifter before every ride

Speedsensor2 on other bike also has same issue so it cannot be the sensor

The unit also auto pauses if speed drops below 10mph even if the auto pause is set to "stopped", this looks like a bug in the software

My wife has the Garmin 530 & her sensors auto connect except cadence which has never worked till date & her speed sensor works fine with no drops

At this point I have communicated extensively with Garmin support (3 different people) & sent them my ride logs/ ant+ debug logs with all the asserts & multiple emails with extensive ride info & details maps & graphs

  • Yes, this same problem of momentary speed spikes has occurred previously. I've only ever seen it on the 1030+. I previously had a 1030 and 1000, and never saw this problem on either of them over several years of use.

  • Yep & the heart rate monitor will also "flat-line" at random.  I've changed the batteries on all sensors even though the sensors are barely 6 months old

Either it's a firmware issue (very likely) or their entire batch production run of the 1030+ was faulty (much less likely)

Garmin took the logs & didn't even bother with the diagnostics & just asked me if I wanted a new 1030+ & shipped the old one back, which was bought in Jan, 2022 & still looked like new

I did ask if they had an upgrade program so I could pay the $100/200 & just get the 1040 & they said no, but they were really nice to work with

My main concern is if they had a bad production run, but if its firmware related then once the new 6.50 is out we can easily test that & if it resolves the issue then that solves the problem that everyone seems to be running into.
