1030+ Bug - Setup/Migration

Garmin sent over a new 1030+ replacement  & I shipped the old one out

Here is my experience setting up the new unit

1. Renamed existing unit to 1030+ old

2. Powered on new unit & turned on Connect app on iPhone

3. Went through set up and was asked

   a. Migrate existing profiles ?   Yes

   b. Migrate Sensors ?  yes

4. Setup completes & indicates I need to sync with my phone so I do that in the connect app

5. Connect app sends over a new firmware update to new 1030+ & it reboots

6. NO profiles or sensors show up

7. Go to setting/reset on new 1030+ & restart setup all over again (and removed device from connect app)

(yes you do need to now delete bluetooth entries on the phone, which show up with the same name, making it more complicated than needed)

8. Setup completes & reboots.   Sensors show up, profiles & datafields are missing

At this point I gave up trying to reset the unit yet again & going through this whole process & redid the profiles manually

Garmin, please QA your software as this is a such a simple step or optionally make a migrate option available somewhere in settings or in the connect app where you can select what you want to send to the new device.

(You could literally encode profiles & sensors in 1 json file & send it over to the target device)

These devices are much simpler in design than an iPhone & if it can be done on a phone, it is doable on these devices, especially if they are identical versions

Thank You

  • As for Profiles it would have been much easyer simply by copying some files:
-old device: all fit files from /Settings, /Sports, /Totals
-new device: copy all files to /NewFiles

    Done!
(works of course only for same device type)

The folders above contain the following information:

    • Settings contains Settings.fit and stores User profile and device settings
    • Sports contains Cycling.fit and stores all specific settings under the Bike Setting menu
    • Totals contains Totals.fit and stores device totals for time and distance

(But my personal opinion on this is that it is better to do the setup again manually to not transfer problematic files from the old device....)

  • Well, yes, if this documented somewhere.

Their own 1030+ manual says you cannot rerun setup once the device is setup, which you can obviously work around with a reset.

I mean both devices support bluetooth & it would be so easy to have a profile editor in the connect app or web app & simply send that over.

I will be testing the replacement device this weekend & hoping this works out
