Training Status Unavailable after 2+ weeks

Hello everyone!

I've been using the 1030 plus for the better part of 3 months now.  I went on vacation from July 4-12 this past month, prior to which the training status feature worked great - along with daily suggested workouts.  However, since returning, I've ridden 12 times since July 13 (today is July 27) WITH a heart rate strap, just as I did previously.  The training status remains unavailable and daily suggested workouts just continues telling me to ride for one week using a heart rate strap.

Here's what I've tried so far:

  1. My Stats -> Training Status -> Hamburger Menu -> toggled pause training
  2. My Stats -> Training Status -> Hamburger Menu -> toggled physio trueup
  3. Powered device off, on
  4. Sync'd to Connect (I do this daily)

As I said, this WAS working fine prior to going on vacation.

My device info from connect.garmin.com:

Edge 1030 Plus
  • Software is up to date — Version 6.40
  • Synced Tuesday, Jul 26 at 13:50

EDIT: I just did a Reset Default Settings and there's no change.  My rides are all still there, which means the data is still there for analysis, but Training Status is still unavailable.

Anyone have a fix for this?  It's pretty annoying and I really used this feature.

***** UPDATE *****

I just completed a 230 mile ride with power meters on the 1030 and the training status is back.  It does in fact appear that HR monitor AND power meter are required.  I figure I must have gotten power figures stored in here from my use with a trainer many months ago (like in early spring) and it carried forward.  Must have just aged out at some point.  At any rate, you need both!

  • Do you have a power meter on your bike or trainer?
If not then it won't work.
Some more info is here: https://support.garmin.com/en-SG/?faq=apva7Th82K6Mm0zY4shzD6

  • I do not have a power meter, yet, but it’s incoming. I will say, and honestly Rob no offense, that your statement or Garmin’s documentation is inaccurate because it DID show up previously. I guess we shall see when the pedals get here next week! I will update with the results.

  • I just got a 1030 plus, linked it 3 days ago. I previously recorded rides and strength training using a Venu 2. I do not use a powermeter.

    Training status is there.

  • If you have Physio TrueUp enable that status is from the Venu 2.

  • Fair enough, It didn't before I changed bikes and once I got one with a power meter it worked. Anyway surely the cycling data is is pretty inaccurate without a power meter?

I wouldn't' say cycling data is necessarily "inaccurate" ... I mean you still have HR, cadence, speed, elevation and the like.  Plenty of notable riders trained just fine for years without power meters.  I'll keep an eye on it after I get the power meter, if it still is not working I guess I'll factory reset the device and start at zero on it again.

  • Virtually the same thing happened to me. I started using my new 1030 Plus, with HR monitor, two weeks ago. I also use a Garmin Venu 2 and enabled Physio TrueUp on both devices. I do not have a power meter so I was pleasantly surprised and very happy to see that Training Status was working (and updating) on the 1030 Plus from activities recorded on the 1030 Plus and the Venu 2. I also had a new Training Readiness card appear in my Connect app on my phone and it also appeared in Connect on the web. The 1030 even showed my VO2 Max from the Venu 2 and I was even getting "Daily Suggested Workouts".  Then several days ago, the Training Status stopped updating on the 1030 and now shows "Unavailable". The VO2 Max reading is gone also and no more Daily Suggested Workouts. The Training Readiness card is also gone from the Connect app on my phone. Some related things are still available and updating -- such as Load for the last seven days, Load Focus (in the Connect app, but not on the 1030), and exercise load.

I have read and understand the Garmin instructions about the Power Meter requirements, but my question is why was everything working for the first two weeks?...  and why did it suddenly stop?  It's disappointing because a power meter is not in my budget right now.

  • Well, that's a bummer. Time to sell my first kid to buy a power meter.

  • Enjoy it while you can. Let us know how long it lasts. I started using my new 1030 on July 14th and it looks like Training Status stopped working (status Unavailable) on the 26th (three days ago). On a positive note, I do still have metrics from the 1030 that I didn't have before. Screenshots below from the Connect app on my phone. Guess I need to start saving for a power meter.

  • you are correct Rob:
