1030+ Bug lits

I've used the Edge 1030+ since Jan 2022 and here is the list of issues I run into on every ride (roadbike)

This is on the latest firmware and the screen fields are all the defaults Garmin built-ins

Bontrager IQ Light Control is the only extra app that is installed

All sensors are from Garmin apart from the SRAM Force/Quarc and all are connected using ANT+

1. Unit will randomly pause as I'm riding and speed will show 17-20mph and drop to 3 mph and go back up.  GPS is set to use all satellites.  Wheel is using Garmin's SpeedSensor 2

2. Power/Cadence will freeze/remain stuck at 70 pwr/ 60 cad despite changing the battery in the SRAM/Quarc meter.

3. Unit will never find the headlight/taillight (Ion Flare RT), until the unit is rebooted at-least once, after which it announces battery is critical on the lights despite being fully charged

Would it be possible for Garmin to actually fix these basic issues or hire more developers to do so for their flagship product ?

Repeatable issues on every build indicate a broken process control and this will create an inflection point where competitors like Hammerhead/Karoo 2 can move into the same space

As a longtime developer, the above is not exactly rocket science and I am willing to work with the dev team to narrow down any issues and see that they are resolved and supply any diagnostic information they would like.

Thank You.

  • Hi

Do all these sensors seem to drop at the same time or individually?

Can you please confirm what software version your Edge is on?

  • Version 6.40

I am holding the unit in my hand at the moment.

Before starting any ride I have to swipe down, sensors and manually connect heart/speed/pwer,cad/shifters otherwise the unit will not auto detect them when I start the ride

    Last 4-5 rides

    1. Power/cad gets stuck, so I replaced the 3032 battery in the Quarc/SRAM crank and the display still froze at 60 cad, even though I am very sure I was pedaling faster & the cadence was higher on the SRAM AXS website when stats were auto uploaded.

Garmin connect will show higher power/cadence, so this may be a display field issue.

Yes, the unit was rebooted before the ride

    2. Speed Sensor 2  "found".  It was manually connected when I started the ride so I have no idea what the heck happend 1 mile down the road for it to be found again.

Per above, I was a software dev, so I would be glad to be able to help resolve these issues, so it helps everyone using these  products

Is the Bontrager Light IQ app sandboxed or would it cause any interference with the regular display ?

The app only detects and forms a light network the first time the unit is rebooted and never ever works on subsequent rides so I just manually turn lights on & off every ride

    Regards

    Pete

  • Another bug for the list and this one happened 30 secs ago while I was holding the unit in my hand and checking my settings

Settings -> Activity Profile -> (pick a profile) -> Timer Start Mode -> (set at 6mph) -> I selected Auto

The screen immediately changed to my Profile and started a ride, without being prompted

    1. Hit lower right button to end ride and discard

    2. Back to settings to check what the heck had just happened and it was back to 6mph

If there was no activity started then how did it start by merely changing a setting ?

How is QA not catching these issues ?

  • "How is QA not catching these issues ?"

QA is not a process that Garmin is familiar with...

  • This is a great opportunity for users & Garmin to work together and take the products to a whole new level

  • I very much want these fixed (and similar on other x30 devices) but with the 1040 now released, (with a whole mountain of its own issues, some on your list above) and 540/840 somewhere around the corner, the usual Garman pattern that I have observed from numerous previous devices is for the older devices to now be mostly ignored, maybe get one or two more token releases and then.....the last few releases have not exactly been packed with much needed fixes?

I would love to be proven wrong because I don't see myself becoming a 1040 beta tester in the next year or two either.

  • This is why we are posting the list here to try to get Garmin to work with us users.

The other option would be a class action suit and that does not help anyone.

I called Garmin support a few weeks ago to see if they had any upgrade/trade-in options for 1030+ owners and while the support person was very nice, it left me with an impression that they simply could not conceive of such a thing.

This tells me the market is ripe for disruption and the Karoo2 is be one of the first waves to hit this market.

I have never used a product that was this unstable at this price point.

  •  Would it be alright with you if I messaged you directly to get some more information to take a further look into this ?

  • Yes, absolutely. I will also give you my direct contact number & will work with you or the dev team to fix these issues.

I really just want the unit to work consistently for me & everyone else.

  • Have you tried a total reset of the device? Unfortunately, sometimes that is what it takes to correct problems. I had to reset my 1030 when it had several problems but it’s been almost two years now that it has worked flawlessly.
