Tell me about the 1030+ screen

I have a 530 and have had over the last 10+ years a 200, 510 & 520. I grumble a bit about a few things but have generally been happy with them all. I do long (multi day/night) Audax rides mostly just following the loaded course line without turn guidance, maybe with some course points. Like many "mature" riders my eyesight is not getting any better with time so my "next" device is likely one with a bigger screen, a month ago I just assumed this would be a 1040 but the storm of 1040 "issues" goes well beyond what I would consider normal first release software and with the benefit (?) of 50 years of software design, development, testing etc I am sceptical these can be easily fixed and I don't want to spend the next 12+ months being an unpaid tester, I just want a device that is predictable and just works.

So, my attention turns to the next best option, a 1030+ maybe and noting they are already discounted by 30-40%. I have scanned the forums and as the x30s share software I reckon I have a good handle on the 1030+ issues. The one thing that would concern me is the screen. I am very impressed with my 530s readability and map colors under all conditions even though the screen is a bit too tiny and I use no backlight for day use and only 10% at night. There are many comments that the 1030+ lacks the "vividness" of the 1030 or 530/830, the 1030+ screen is sometimes described as "dull", "washed out". I have looked at a lot of 1030+ videos but can't really form an opinion regarding this one issue. I won't have an opportunity to view one in the flesh for a few weeks so thought I might ask here for views.

Any insights on the screen or other concerns? Thanks.

  • Edge 1030 and PLUS model have the same screen. Yes, colors are dull and washed out, but only indoor. The more sunlight shines on the display the better the colors are. In bright sunlight the colors are perfect and even better as on Edge 1000.

So, when you unbox and turn on the new device inside your home, you will be shocked. You must see it outside!

  • Edge 1030 has a known halo issue you could experience. Some even reported the screen loosening from the case.

This is why I changed mine for an Edge 1030 plus.

  • Thanks for the replies, since my post a few days ago Garmin have released the Explore 2 which seems like a slightly scaled down 1040 without ALL the performance stuff that I have never used on my 530 and would never use on the 1040, and the biggie is that the Explore 2 is half the price of the 1040. also 30% less than the 30% discounted 1030 plus I was considering, very interesting. It's not available in my region for a month or two so time to think about it. I am not a Garmin device marketing wiz but it doesn't seem to leave a lot of room for 540/840 size/speced type device?
