How do I make Device Transfers work?

I just received a refurbished 1030 Plus, to replace my 1030 Plus that was damaged last week in a crash.

I thought that before I send the old unit in for credit, I would play with Device Transfers.  I haven't done this since I sold my Edge 1030.  It seems to be just as difficult as ever to get the two Edge units to see each other.  They are both powered on, and I used the menu to get to Connected Features, then Device Transfers.  As I have become used to, the "Nearby Connections" screen just shows a circle of dots that just keep rotating.  There is a "sync" symbol on the bottom right of this screen, but I don't see anything happening when I press it.  The two units are lying side by side on my desk as I type this.

Does anyone know the magic formula to get them to see each other?

  • Interestingly, I was just playing around, while waiting for the devices to find each other.  I pressed the Share Files option, selected Courses, and Select All.  Then the new unit showed (BT)Edge 1030 Plus, and when I pressed that option, I was shown five courses.  Transferring started, and failed after the third course.  I could see three courses on the new unit. So I went back to the old unit and selected my last three courses to transfer (because I wasn't sure whether the third course transferred completely), and repeated the operation.  Now I have all five courses visible on the new unit.

So I guess the stupid process doesn't tell you when it finds nearby devices, but if you assume it did find one or more, file transfer does work.  I went into Navigation, Courses, and Saved Courses, and I could also see the five courses.

It's nice (that's sarcasm) that the feature has been removed from the new Edge 1040, so that you don't have to worry about it.
