Help. Downloading maps outside of Sync on Garmin Express

I live in a rural area and we use LTE with up and down speeds that really vary and the odd connection issue. We also have data caps. I am needing to get an update to the North America maps, Canada mainly. I have tried now and the DL from Garmin Express fails out. We have 3 devices to update.

I am hoping there is a way that the file itself can be downloaded and installed on the devices. We have a 1030 plus and 2x 830's. Trying to do individually is failing but also takes forever and is a massive waste for the exact same data. This is painful as the device ALSO has to be connected. I get times in the 4-10 hours.

If my Garmin had the NA base maps, could I just DL the maps from below? Then just manually add to the devices?  There has to be a way to just get the files.

  • You could go to extract.bbbike.org and extract just Canada ( selecting an area bounding box of only the bits you want), download and put in device Garmin directory, I would imagine it is significantly smaller than whole North America, the selection dialog will estimate the size of the file within your bounding box area. Get "Garmn Latin" versions . There can be issues when enabled maps overlap so you might have to disable the existing NA maps and enable the downloaded one. If you still have size issues there is the Garmin OnRoad format maps on that site , these are about 10% the size of the normal formats

  • Yes, do this and create the map for just the region you need.

You can download the map once and copy the same file to the three units.

    Copy the map to \Garmin.

  • It is possible to late for you, but maybe it will help others:

It is possible to update one device and then copy updated .IMG files from one device to another. Map files are .IMG files located in Garmin catalogue.

  • That might work. At least will help a bit. Hasn’t been a hot issue yet but might have to try and update one unit and copy over.

    thanks
