Do maps update automatically with new/changed roads, POIs etc? If so, how, and how often? & how accurate have people found them to be?

Garmin updates the maps twice per year. Updating is done with Garmin Express and can be a bit finicky.
The map data is based on OpenStreetMap so it should be quite accurate. I find the maps quite accurate and useful, but I guess it really depends on your location.
I've just dug this from the Garmin website (https://www.garmin.com/en-GB/maps/updates/cycling/): 'We currently offer map updates for CityNavigator maps and Garmin Cycle Maps. If you’ve added City Navigator maps in DVD format to a map-compatible fitness device, you need to download the Garmin Express desktop app to update the cycle maps that came with your device'.
I didn't download in DVD format, the maps came pre-loaded on the Edge 1030+, so the above implies I don't need to use Express. Surely updates should happen automatically in the background without users having to check? I bought my unit 2 weeks ago but the map's already out of date (2 new local roads built over a year ago still not showing).
The maps on the Edge 1030 Plus are the Garmin Cycle Maps, not the CityNavigator maps.
The Cycle Maps are also updated via Garmin Express. See https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=LR6HR5Xul6A9zoxySC5KM9 which also explains how to check for updates.
I know Garmin has its quirks but find it hard to believe they would make something so basic (and potentially critical) so difficult! I've done another search and found this:
Updating the Software Using the Garmin Connect App
Before you can update your device software using the Garmin Connect app, you must have a Garmin Connect account, and you must pair the device with a compatible smartphone.
When new software is available, the Garmin Connect app automatically sends the update to your device.
This seems to make much more sense (if it works)?
Aren't you confusing device software updates that are updated as described in the Garmin webhelp (can also be done using Garmin Express with USB connected device, by the way) with map updates that need Garmin Express?
Firmware updates are small in size compared to map updates. Map updates can take up to an hour or more depending on the speed of the internet connection. The map update would be extremely slow going through Garmin Connect mobile.
