New Edge 1030 Plus not going to sleep?

I've recently bought an Edge 1030 plus, and have had a series of Garmins in the past, but this is the first time I've ever had the device stay on long after my ride is complete. I am quite sure the device is not accidently starting to track, Timer Start mode has been set to Prompted at 15 kmph. I've also made sure Auto Sleep is turned on. The device was on for hours without me interacting with it and it is still connected to my phone. I can't find anything obvious in the Connect app that might be causing this. Is there some setting that I'm missing or is there a potential issue with the device?

  • Are you actually turning it off or placing it in sleep mode?  To turn it off, the power button needs to be pressed and held for a few seconds and then the option to turn it off will appear. Just a momentary pressing of the power button puts it in sleep mode.

  • Just a momentary pressing of the power button puts it in sleep mode.

…or if „take a screenshot“ is enabled, it just takes a screenshot!

  • Auto sleep will only work once you are in an activity and there is no movement after 5 minutes, below is a snippet from the manual

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can use the Auto Sleep feature to automatically enter sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity. During sleep mode, the screen is turned off and the ANT‍+® sensors, Bluetooth®, and GPS are disabled.

Wi‑Fi® continues to run while the device is asleep.

  • I have had a case open with Garmin on this since October when I got the 1030+

After auto-pause kicks in below the preset speed, then following that and after 5 minutes of inactivity, the Edge should go to sleep - the screen should go blank. It doesn't.  For many users is not much of a problem due to the extended battery life on the 1030+, however, if you are using Varia Radar (and I guess the front Garmin light too) then the Varia Radar remains active and flashing when you are stopped (say at the cafe). Even that wouldn't be a huge problem IF after turning the Radar off, it would reconnect when you started riding again - most times if the Edge has been left on, the light won't reconnect.

I now have a small sticker on the top of my screen that says 'SLEEP'  - it remains me to press pause (be careful NOT to end or discard the ride) than to press/hold the power button and use the sleep option instead of turning it off.

It was even suggested by Garmin that some of my sensors might be stopping the device from sleeping:

    I have Garmin

    • Garmin Speed Sensor,
    • Garmin Varia Vision,
    • Garmin Virb Elite Camera
    • Garmin RTL515 Radar
    • Stages Power Meter.

I turned them all off and it makes no difference.

The ONLY TIME THAT SLEEP WILL WORK Is if you leave the edge on the desk (for instance) NOT recording an activity! I was even told once that, that is the only time it should go to sleep! Maybe with the older 1000 (which was my last model) but certainly not with the 1030+ (Garmin have confirmed) .

What really dismays me, is how long this and other cases have been open without any sign of a response from Garmin. I really do despair at their technical 'support'. Everything has to get resolved in the U.S. (Arizona I believe)  and all the local support centres can do is pass the queries on. I really feel for the local support staff :-(  This has been my experience since the Edge 800 10 years ago and sadly it doesn't seem to get any better :-(

We send in our Express Logs and the Garmin Folders (not easy due to the file size even after removing unnecessary files), Jump through hoops trying to provide 'evidence' ( They ask for video evidence - Trying to video your Garmin Screen Showing a mapping error while you ride for instance is NOT easy)!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Garmin - get your act together - you are losing far too many once-loyal customers to other providers :-(

  • No Garmin I have had would go to sleep following activation of 'Auto Pause'. For the edge to go to sleep you would have to press the stop button, then after 5-min inactivity the edge will go to sleep or as you are doing at the moment put it to sleep yourself  by briefly pressing the power button

  • Great name hotdog... :-) I agree with you completely! I've had the 800, 810, 1000 and now the 1030+. I had similar queries on the 1000 and was told that the manual was incorrect in the way it described the feature. Before Buying the 1030+ I contacted Garmin to see if the feature now worked and have emails from them confirming that the Edge 1030+ should go to sleep after 5 minutes without movement when in an activity (without needing any user intervention). So I went ahead and purchased it partly on that advice. I obviously found that it didn't work :-( . I raised a case with Garmin and after much discussion, they opened a full support ticket, confirming again that during an activity the device should go to sleep as discussed. That was last October and along with other issues (3D Map road trace disappears when following a route/temperature reads 6F low/Varia Vision display goes blank when on Garmin Segments/No support for Accuweather App/Repeated Re-Sync of Garmin Segments In Express) I'm still waiting for an update on the case. I have called every few weeks for an update but none can be given.

I can only go on what they tell me ;-)

    Thanks for your reply :-)

  • It's very frustrating when you get duff information from a manufacturer, which forms a basis of your buying decision. It's like you feel they are defrauding you in some way.

I found one circumstance, where the device won't sleep even when you're not recording an activity. This occurred when I was getting the train home after my ride. I stopped & saved the ride when I got to the station then put my edge to sleep.

When I was on the train I thought I'd have a look at the ride summary for the day. After I'd finished looking at it I put it on the table but forgot to switch it off. 20 minutes later I noticed it hadn't gone to sleep. I can only guess that even though I wasn't recording anything & the home screen was being displayed the movement of the train  must have been preventing the edge from going to sleep.
