Garmin 1030+ No connection whatsoever.

This morning during our groupsride one of my fellow riders came to me saying that his 1030+ didn't register anything.
It also kept on searching for satelites... forever.
After the ride i took the device home with me to dig a bit deeper and found that i can navigate and change all settings within the device but that connection wise it is totally unresponsive.
It will not connect to my PC, nor Garmin Express (my 810 and a 1000 lying around here connect without a problem and show up in Express and on my PC), it will not connect to a phone nor wifi, it keeps on searching for GPS signals (changing to various GPS option doesn't change anything) although i get a 2 bar satelite connection indoors and 4 outside on screen.

Since there is no connection to PC, a backup of the device files is not possible, nor a firmware upgrade/downgrade.
In fact, it's not possible to do anything with it besides navigating the intern software.

Reset the default settings resets everything but still no connection whatsoever with anything.

Firmware 5.20.

Question: Now what?

  • How?

Because i found various methods on the internet, non of them actually worked (besides clearing the data etc....).

After this method: Turn device off. Then, power then device on. While booting up, press and hold upper-left corner of the touch window once the copyright information appears.
Continue pressing the left hand corner of the screen until you receive the prompt Non-prompted Non-Vol Clear - Clears NV and deletes all FIT files including Activities, Courses, Workouts. Turn device off. Hold Lap/Reset and Start/Stop and while holding, press the power button. Continue to hold only Lap/Reset and Start/Stop Release Lap/Reset and Start/Stop when the Garmin Logo is cleared. The unit will restart and perform the hard reset.

The device does not performed a hard reset because some data was still set like i set it before but when connecting, it shows up for a very short time in Windows while switching normal screen to loading screen. It also shows the connection icon but after that brief moment, it vanishes again from Windows.
Garmin Express (latest version) just doesn't find it either. (it finds my own devices without a problem).

  • AFAIK:

    • Turn device off
    • Hold Lap/Reset and Start/Stop
    • Press and release the power button
    • Continue to hold only Lap/Reset and Start/Stop
    • Release Lap/Reset and Start/Stop when the Garmin Logo is cleared
    • The unit will restart and clear non-vol
  • That's one of those various methods i tried. It resets alright but the unit still doesn't find satelites, doesn't connect to anything, doesn't register data when riding. The only thing i can do is change settings in the various menu's but that's about it. Weird. I have never seen such behaviour before.

Bluetooth is the only thing that works. So i can make a connection with Garmin Connect (Android) and the Edge and i can transfer things like a course.

Also just went on a ride, no registration of anything whatsoever, no speed, cadans, location etc... Nothing.

  • If you are able to navigate menus, are you able to see what Software versions are installed by looking in the About section of the device? Listing the various software versions would be helpful to see if there are any gaps to close there.

  • Softwareversion: 5.20

    GPS version: 4.80

    TSC Version: 0.04.00

    WLAN Software Version: 2.10

    Connect IQ Version: 3.2.5

    EPO: Missing (?)

Biggest issue is that the device is not recognized by PC (and therefore also Garmin Express, Garmin Connect through android phone works though) which makes accessing impossible.

Drivers are OK since i can connect to an 810 and 1000 without a problem.
