Edge 1030 Plus - altitide gain/distance issue despite AutoPause being switched off

Dear all,

I face strange effects with my Edge 1030 Plus whic I basically like a lot mainly because of the excellent map functions (custom maps, birds eye ...).

However I detected at a 7 hr 1200 altitude meter hike (yes mountain hike not biking) that the Edge 1030 Plus recorded only about half of the tour and altitude gain).
AutoPaus function was switched off.

Question: is it possible to fix this issue in order to have a correct distance and altitude gain also when hiking. I know it's a cycling device, but Garmins top model and I do not understand why this failure happens. We had hikers with Garmins Fenix watches with us and they all had the same - correct - distance+altitude gain. Only the Edge 1030 Plus failed.

May I ask why this is the case? Can I change something in device specification in order to receive correct distance and altitude when hiking.

==>The Edge 1030 Plus is a great device also for hiking due to its large display and superb map functions. It would be akward if one cannot use this marvellous features due to wrong
distance/altitude gain measuring.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

  • Uuuuh, I just read the contributions in the article you just posted, thank you.

Mcinner sums it up in a nutshell:

    From my point of view:
it is not a question of poor antenna and it is not a question of a poor GPS signal.
Look at my above picture of the recorded GPS track - it is a perfectly recorded track for walking!

It is the question, why does the device not calculate the right distance out of the well recorded GPS trackpoints!

    For example:
look at the first 30 sec (half minute) of my walk in the excel sheet above:
    GPS coordinates say, I have walked about 25 m - that‘s about 3 km/h and that‘s correct.
Edge calculation for that half minute says I have walked 1 m. That‘s ridiculous and has nothing to do with bad GPS reception.

So, if I understand it correctly: The garmin Edge 1030 Plus as one of Gramin*s top models is not able up to now to
calculate the correct distance and altitude gain from hikes despite monitoring and displaying the correct GPS-based routse/trails on the display.

This is exactly the issue I faced and described above.

@Garmin developers: I know you are great guys and you supported and helped us a lot up to now with fix of bugs we reported in the past - can you please analysze this problem and consider it with the next firmware update?
Maybe it also solves the inaccuracies with distance and especially altitude gain when Mountainbiking which the Edge 1030 Plus still faces.

The device is such a cool outdoor computer - it is a pity if your top cycling device still cannot cope with competitor's
cycling computers regarding distance and altutude gain accuracy. We want the Edge 1030 Plus to be the best device
    on the market!
