Course points

Not sure if this is a problem with edge or with GC app on iOS. When creating a course in GC on web with added course points (food, summit, etc), and then sending to device, the course point screen displays the correct distances to course point. If I create the same course via GC app with the same course points, and then send to device, the course point screen displays 0ft for all course points. It makes no difference if I send the course to the device through the app or through the web. The course points display correctly in the map screen. Anybody else notice this?

  • It's not a problem with the Edge. It has no idea how the course file got onto the device.

The course points (all of them) in the file should have distance.

I suppose it's possible app is "forgetting" to put/include the distance.

If you convert the FIT file to TCX, you should be able to see that (the TCX file is just text).

  • Yes, that's exactly what's happening. Thanks dpawlyk. The app-generated course has latitude and longitude information associated with course point, but distance is recorded as 0m. So problem is with GC app, not edge. I'll see if I can transfer this thread to the relevant forum.

  • I spoke with Garmin on this and they are aware of the issue and are working on a fix.

  • Was there ever a fix with this?

I'm getting course point irregularities when I send a course from GC to my Edge 1030plus. The course points appear out of order, with some missing, and without their associated distance and time data.

When I open the gpx in Plotaroute, everything appears as it should. What is going wrong and what can I do to fix it?

  • Where is the course being authored and how is it getting to the Edge.

GPX files don't contain course points. Only TCX and FIT files do.

  • The event organiser sent a (long) route in two tcx files. I converted them to gpx on AllTrails and then joined them into a single route on Garmin Basecamp. In Connect I added some course points, which are the control checkpoints on the route. I have done this in the past with no problems -- they're really useful on the ride to see how far the next control is. I notice that GC has had a little upgrade recently with a better interface for setting a virtual partner speed and for adding course points.

I then sent the gpx to my Edge from GC. The checkpoints didn't appear correctly and it hadn't worked out distance or time for any of them. I also tried downloading the file as a FIT and  transferring the file via USB from my computer. Neither worked...

  • Can you share links to all these routes?

  • I then sent the gpx to my Edge from GC

GC sends it as a FIT file. (Talking about GPX files is confusing because GPX files don't have course points.)

Why don't you make the course in GC public and provide the route? (You can always make it private later.)

    ========================

I tried a 42 mile route/course from RWGPS and the course points from that show up in the course point page properly (using a 1030+).

I wonder if your issue might be related to this.
