Garmin: Fix the small cursor issue in System 5 or reimburse my money

Hi Garmin,

I have posted about this issue a number of times and I am getting increasingly annoyed. The cursor (location indicating where I am on the map) is ridiculously small to the point where a person with normal eye sight often needs to play the "Where's Waldo" game to find out where I am.

There WAS a version of the operating system including an option to set the cursor to a nice large white triangle with black border. That worked really well. Then you–Garmin–took it away for no apparent reason. You have crippled my device to the point where it is a real and constant pain to operate. The picture below is one of the better use cases. Following a Trailforks trail (black), looking for a black triangle that is barely wider than the path of the trail on the display, is nothing short of aggravating.

I don't remember the "and we removed the following useful features..." section in the release notes. Garmin, you have rendered my device a real pain. Fix this issue or reimburse me so that I can buy a product that actually works.

There have been a number of very useful hints from other users but my point here is that it is time for Gamin to fix the mess they made. Garmin, why are you:

  • not actually reading the comments in this forum?
  • generally ignoring good UX design including accessibility? How else would you come up with this kind of terrible design?
  • not ever acknowledging user concerns? How about commenting with something like "we look into this... "
  • removing essential features

Clearly the problem CAN be fixed. The large white/black triangle existed in previous versions. Also, there is the (oh don't go there) virtual partner cursor. Even that one is much larger. Why would the most important piece of information - your location - be maximally obfuscated by design?

If you don't plan to fix this issue please tell me and give me back my money.

  • I had to study this on a computer to find it, must be near impossible when actually riding the bike.

  • When navigating, the cursor is always in the same place.

  • Are you suggesting I glue a piece of bright tape onto the screen? There are many use cases, e.g., when zooming, panning, etc. where the cursor moves. It would be great to actually see it.

  • Probably I am doing something wrong as I never noticed any problem to find that triangle.

  • is it larger than the one I am showing on the screen image?

  • You only can get a larger triangle if you chose:
profile - navigation - map themes: high contrast

But then the map face is not the same.
So, also not a good solution…

Garmin Beta team stated, they will bring a larger triangle, but nobody knows when.

  • You can keep the cursor fixed in the same place (in the center of the screen). Just leave the trail guidance UP. I think in this photo who is UP is the north.Good Lucky

  • Why the clever advocates of unsatisfactory cursor size don't understand that some people have poorer eyesight?
You will also see. It is only matter of time. How much will Garmin pay you for this?

  • It looks like the current location triangle is coded in a fixed number of pixels, contrary of being relative to the screen size - the larger the screen (1030 / 1030+ / ...) the more pixels. My old Edge 800 and Edge Touring (Plus) have much less pixels in the screen, but don't suffer this issue.

On car navigation systems and more, the cursor location 'image' is configurable by choosing a different 'Vehicle'. These vehicles are stored in .srf files. Couldn't this be an option to implement in the Edge series of GPSr's, so users can choose the one that fits them as best? A small collection of triangles, differing in color, size and layout (with border or without) would be sufficient.

Indeed terrible software. Has anyone ever tested it on a bike? Disapearing track/route for half an hour (?) and then suddenly showing up again. Slow reaction of the map at turning points. And that nasty virtual partner..... Who has ever, ever, ever got the stu[id idea to implement that feature?
