1030 Plus records less mileage than other computers and Strava

My 1030 Plus records lower mileage than other bike computers (even other Garmins) and Strava.  For example, a 20 mile route out and back with not much elevation change mine recorded 19.5 and my friend's recorded 20.  Last Saturday, also on mostly a flat route along the coast, mine recorded 57.5 and other computers and Strava recorded 60.2.

I'm getting ready to ride a non-organized century ride and don't want to ride an additional 5 miles or more bc my computer doesn't record properly.  Can anyone help?

  • Is the unit paired with a speed sensor? If so check that the wheel circumference value is correct. Look under the sensor details for the speed sensor.

  • I do have a Giant Speed and Cadence sensor paired with my Garmin. When I select Sensors and then Speed/Cadence Sensor on my Garmin, it does not provide options for wheel circumference. Suggestions?

  • You might need to be in communication with the sensor at the time. It may be under a sub menu. I don't have a combo sensor like that to check

  • Yes!  That's it! I turned on my Garmin while in proximity to my bike and cadence/speed sensor and the computer gave me the option to select automatic or manual wheel circumference.  It was set on automatic and the default is 2300.  My wheel size is 700x25 tubular and online indicates a circumference of 2105.

I'll test it out this week prior to my century but as Luko79 indicates below, the shorter C will end with a longer ride.  Ugh... I'm still stuck.

    Thank you so much!

  • With 2300 (instead of 2105) You should get LONGER route with almost 10%...  (and not less with ~2-3%). But You will see with manual 2105 setting , let us know after the century pls Slight smile

  • Agree... I intend to check it prior to the century as I'd like to get this resolved so I get an accurate reading for my first ever century...

  • The thing with automatic is that the value is constantly being recalculated so you are only seeing that last value used.

I use a manual setting and perform a rollout test to get a good number.

  • I have Garmin speed sensors on my bikes.  I run 700x25 clincher tires.  I checked two bikes just now, and they were set to automatic, and the circumference values were 2105 and 2106.  2105 is the value given in Wahoo's tire size chart for 700x25.

Do you have the Strava app on your smart phone?  If not, I would suggest adding it.  When you do your century, measure with your bike computer and your phone, and take the value that you like best!

You should also be able to disable your speed sensor and allow your Edge to calculate distance using the GPS.  I have always found that quite accurate, unless your ride includes tunnels or long underpasses (like a freeway underpass) that cause the signal to be lost.  People who live near forests (I'm in the desert called Southern California) also can lose GPS when they're among the trees.
